Saturday’s Gate River Run, the 45th running of the 15K race, will be my fifth year as part of the broadcast. It’s also one of my favorite days of the year.
Along with The Players Championship, Florida-Georgia game and Jaguars’ gamedays, the Gate River Run has become a signature sporting event in Northeast Florida.
For me, it’s on the Mt. Rushmore of Jacksonville sporting events. Saturday’s Gate River Run, the 45th running of the 15K race, will be my fifth year as part of the broadcast. It’s also one of my favorite days of the year.
It does not appear to be a big city but Jacksonville is so spread out that it is and it has a huge population. They do a good job with the race and the people come out to cheer the runners through most of the course. Jacksonville hosts NCAA regional level competitions and has minor league teams, so the race is its sporting highlight. No need to address the Jaguars.

Most people don’t realize that Jacksonville is the most populous city in FL with more than twice the population of Miami.
Yeah, but that's only because they annexed a huge amount of the surrounding land in the 1960s. Jacksonville is still the largest city in the United States by area, I believe!
