Cain says in the interview, “I have a lot to learn and far too much respect for athletes who have worked tirelessly in the sport for me to just think I can jump in and be the next best thing.”
I'd be nervous in on a tri bike in a race that allows drafting. I'm not a triathlete, but I wouldn't want to be in a pace line with strangers on tri bikes.
Best of luck to her. The first race is always a baseline and a learning experience. If her swim is strong enough to keep her in the lead pack on the bike, she should do well in the run. It's only 2.5k, right?
I think she'll get her elite card by either finishing top-3 or getting two elite score ratings. Her swim seems solid. Her run is elite. Hopefully she's been hammering the bike. She got pretty close to an elite score in her sprint tri back in September on what I would guess was very little training.
I’m assuming it was overuse injury that has hampered her return to the track? If so, wouldn’t the longer distances of a triathlon (10k to full marathon) exacerbate her injuries?
If she’s able to complete the biking portion okay, then she should be able to chase the top finishers down.
a lot of people love to hate on Mary now that she doesn't serve any use for them.
Mary actually did a lot for women's distance running and women's sports in general. She started an important conversation about boundaries, abuse and weight shaming...and I know I know all the toughies at letsrun sit on their armchairs say she should have been able to handle it----but most women, if you bother talking to women--would agree that the sport should and could be better. Mary paved the way for that. She put abusive coaches on notice. It was probably not her plan, or the plan we had hoped for her when she was a high school phenom, but that will be her legacy. I'd say it's a pretty good one.
Do I like everything Mary Cain has done since 2019? Not really. I think her team is a bit misguided--running IS about competition, breaking records and winning-in short competitive running will always be about who is the fastest. There's no way around that. Do I think she'll be a world class triathlete? Probably not either. She won't make an Olympic team or any USA team in anything. She won't recover from her "training" with NOP ever. She'll probably never see how good she could have been. And that's a bit sad. But Mary cemented a place in sports, that is for certain.
Name any of the major Bike Brands and components. Made in Taiwan , where assembly line works age from11-15 years old . China is also the source of most of the raw carbon sheets used to make frames . They also source the carbon in my super shoes .
She has the genetic gift of being a great endurance athlete . She is 25 y old . I don't know if her priorities are to go all in or not . Simon Whitfield said , swim well and draft on the bike, then it is a road race .
