My Wife hates the movie Shawshank Redemption

One of my all-time favorites. It's a bit dark at times, so I could see a very sensitive person having a hard time with it.

Did she explain why? As the 2nd poster said, there are some cruel/sad/dark moments paving the way for the final redemption at the end. But I'm in the pro-Shawshank camp. Is a movie like Goodfellas that if I flip by it I will watch for a while.

This is the clearest case of projection I’ve ever seen. This is such an insane thing to think, much less express to others.. plus it has absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand. Good luck to you and your true desire.

She didn't elaborate. I think it was the dark stuff. Plus she likes to compartmentalize. People in prison are bad and not innocent. I think she does not like that uncomfortable feeling of injustice of falsely imprisoned. She does not like to go there with her emotions.

Generally I think guys like prison movies more than women. Alcatraz etc.

Look, tastes vary. Why is that so hard to grasp?

I think "Shawshank" is a pretty good movie, but wildly overrated at the same time. Meanwhile, I despise "It's a Wonderful Life," finding it ultimately depressing and morally obtuse. Not sure I've ever known anyone else who agrees with that assessment. But so what? As I said, tastes vary. Different people value things differently. Celebrate that. If they didn't, markets wouldn't be possible.

Shawshank is a 5-star movie, one of only a handful in the last 30 years or so. Your only option is divorce. Sorry.

She's on a lower wavelength, this is typical and to be expected.

Let her watch her stuff like Legally Blonde, as long as she keeps you happy and the place tidy.

I remember back when there were video stores, I would on multiple times look at in on the rack and think I should watch this but just wasn't in the mood for a prison movie. Then when I finally watched it I regretted waiting so long to see it, It's very well done and touching.

Shawshank Redemption is an iconic movie. one of the best I have ever seen; however, I can see why someone would not like it. For some, watching a movie is an opportunity to escape, people want romance, fantasy and action. Shawshank explores the human condition, if forces you to pause and internalize the content...it's perhaps too real for your wife. My wife didn't like Gladiator the first time she saw it; she watched it 10 years later, liked it and can't remember that she didn't like it. To me, disliking Gladiator was like not liking vanilla ice cream...how is that possible? My wife watches Hallmark and Lifetimes movies, some of which I can't even make it through. Shawshank Redemption is an excellent movie, but we are all different.

It's actually frightening how insecure Steve is. I'm pretty sure the path he's following he'll end up as a closeted redneck's gimp.

What does it mean for a movie to be playing often? Don't you just watch any movie you want at any time you wish? What year are you visiting us from?

I appreciate Shawshank Redemption for what it is...great actors, great acting, well-put together, etc. But it's a bit slow in the middle, and the story isn't all that compelling. So, I say it's a "good", not "great" movie, and I have no interest in seeing it again (I have seen it in its entirety once and bits and pieces a couple of times).

An example of a GREAT movie is Dude, Where's My Car?
