The Russian stock market has tanked and their already impoverished economy will only get worse as international sanctions kick in. The members of Putin's cosmopolitan oligarch inner circle are nervous and are about to be individually targeted by western governments. There are massive anti-war protests near the Kremlin. The Ukrainian army/people are not going to go down without a fight and Russia will suffer many losses and this neat little invasion could quickly turn into an ongoing boondoggle. Russia's standing in the world has been set back decades. And for what? As if they needed even more barren, crappy land. Putin fancies himself a great leader, but really he's just an egomaniacal zealot who is setting his country on fire for no good reason. This is a bad day for the world but clearly the beginning of the collapse of Putin's regime. Wouldn't be surprised if he "trips" and falls out of a balcony in the near future.

65% of Russia's exports are fossil fuels. Have you noticed what fossil fuel prices did in the wake of the invasion? Anything he loses in sanctions will be made up for with increases in revenue from fossil fuel sales.

It will be interesting to see if the US/EU alliance calls on Saudi Arabia to ramp up production to enable less EU pain from boycotting Russian oil. Remember that the ultra low oil prices in 2020 resulted from SA's punishing Russia, so there's some precedent and the Saudi's are uniquely able to do this on a large scale.

Just like France worked around sanctions on Iran, etc. The whole reason it took a while for Russia to finally invade is they were securing their finances and organizing their way around the "devastating" sanctions that they are now being hit with. Putin is egotistical, lacks a moral compass, etc., but he is calculating (comes from his borderline Asperger's Syndrome). He was raised in an era of atheism / nihilism in the Soviet Union where subjugation to the state was tantamount. Politics is religion in Russia.
