How many 50k xc races have you seen?
*28.4 km
Had that happen to me twice, haven’t made that mistake again after that. One time wasn’t too bad, the other time, numbness went away after a couple weeks. It was a long time ago, but I think I actually got it from running, not skiing (do both) the first time.

Skiers are moving faster than runners, so the time spent exposed to the cold is similar.
Heat pack to unthaw it? No no no no.! That will just make it worse. I'm surprised that a xc skier doesn't know this.
What you do is change into dry clothes, cover yourself with a blanket and warm up gradually. Only then can you take a hot shower or bath.
I don't think they would shuttle runners hours out to the top of a mountain for XC.
I had this happen once. It's a mistake I won't make again! Now if I'm running in the severe cold I put a sock down there for an extra layer of warmth.

Heck...I do it in Summer, just as a precaution

Keeping your penis warm is actually a key part of the men’s competition.
You don’t have to *** the word penis. It’s not a dirty word.

When I was in HS this happened to me during a 10 mile run with a negative below zero temp. I was miserable upon returning home but was too shy to tell my mother what the problem was. I spent a half an hour in the shower before she figured it out. The next day before going out to run my mother met me at the door with piece of wwii surplus wool army blanket that she doubled the fabric up and sewed into a single piece. She handed it to me and told me it was a cod piece. I didn't know at the age of 16 what a cod piece was. So I asked her what it was. She handed me a dictionary and advised me to do my own research.
It was kind of awkward but I really felt blessed that someone was looking out for a male coming from a female. I had know idea up until that time that women knew how to look after males needs.
Thanks Mom!
Downhill skiers have it worse, they go further up the mountain and at 80 miles an hour.
after I moved to a colder country other than the one I grew up, I got my penis pretty cold and hurtful, once! Then I learned that a sock, or two, in my underwear when I go out for a run and the temp is below 0 degrees Celsius, would provide some protection. I would expect that a professional skier would be better prepared for this

the ski lift doesn't go that fast but it would be neat if it did. Might fling them right over the top
The headline is a little misleading. It's not like there was a medical issue; the dude just reported that it froze to the press. He apparently thinks it's funny, because it's not the first time he's talked about his frozen dong.
Anyway, there are wind briefs for this. Swix and Craft make them. When I was in high school, there was a brand called "The Hand" that all the XC skiers used. You had to actually mail in an order form from a catalog. The briefs had a big outline of a hand over your junk. It was kinda funny, but it worked really well. Wind shield on the outside, fleecy on the inside.
You don't really need wind briefs. Take a paper towel, fold it into quarters, put a layer of Vaseline or Bag Balm on one side and put it in your shorts. It's wind proof, water proof, and you just dispose of it when you finish running. It's almost immediately warmer.
Even with windbriefs this isn't uncommon in ski races. The problem is the downhills-- the extra wind of going at high speed will get you every time, especially when your blood flow is going elsewhere while racing.
Pics please
This is why many northern peoples have a shrinky winky to minimize heat loss
