Interesting cultural phenomena: black children in the USA have very little interest in track and field, escpecially in distance running. Almost every recent black distance star in the USA is either an immigrant or a 2nd generation immmigrant (Nuguse, Mu, Cheserek, Chelimo, Manzano, Lomong etc.) and there is an obvious absence of generational African American runners.
The "4min mile is a white achievement" thread got me thinking why is it this way. Vast majority of black youths in the USA is doomed to become mediocre in super competitive popular team sports rather than aiming for greatness in niche sports like athletics, swimming, tennis, skiing and such.
Just think of Serena and Venus Williams success in tennis and imagine what track & field would look like if more parents saw the bigger picture and put their kids in less popular sports instead.
There is surely a fair share of athletic non-sprint type African American children, so why don't we see them in distance running?
