Fisher. By a lot. Because his 12:53 represents something we didnt know he could come anywhere close to. Yakob running a 3:30 is by comparison completely unremarkable. Not only have countless people run faster, but the list also includes Yakob himself.
There is a difference between indoors and outdoors, buddy. You would know that if you ever were a runner. Whenever you want to see something completely unremarkable, just look in a mirror.
Fisher managed a breakthrough and entered a true elite level. Jakob is a legend in making, racking up olympic gold medals and world records. No doubt, that once retired, Fisher will be forgotten in a year, while Jakobs name will stand in the record books for a while.
Weird thread and straw-man. Nobody is proclaiming Jakob’s race a great one. The performance was very good, but it was a well-paced one with no real competition. It’s a shame that Kipsang wasn’t in it, and instead was there showing that 800/1500 types shouldn’t run 2000s.
And it never occured to you, that Tefera could have peaked for that one indoor race? Maybe he was in 3:27 outdoors shape at the time, but will never run anything faster, in- or outdoors. Ethiopians are not exactly geniuses when it comes to periodization, planning, or even distance choice (see Wale).
Also, go run 400m outdoors and then indoors. Report then how much slower you did indoors.
Fishers race was so much more exciting. He destroyed an American running legends record. He ran the legs out from underneath a multi world championship medalist in what was an incredibly bold move from so far out.
The announcing of Fishers race summed up the excitement and passion of knowing an unexpected historical performance was taking place.
Let me let you in on something. The 5000 is almost never more exciting than a 1500. Especially the wr setting 1500 I just watched. But you knew that already
Tefera was never in 3:27 shape. He has a lifetime best of 3:30 so he is a 3:30 guy and that reflects poorly on the quality of that indoor record. It's a JV record. I dont doubt Cole Hocker could have beaten that record.
Ingebrigtsen needed a world record just to meet expectations because everyone already knew he could do it. There was never any doubt who was going to win that race.
Fisher could have run 13:0x and people would have been thrilled. Obviously his race was more exciting because no one saw 12:53 coming.
Fisher 12:53 5k with sub 5 final 2k and it’s not even close!

How is Kipsang running 4:57 for 2nd evidence that 8/15 types don’t belong in the 2k?

What ? So you all think a 21 year old running 2 second faster than the absolute middle distance GOAT El Guerrouj did in the same meet on the same track, and destroying a world record on his way is less impressive than a 25 years old running an indoor American record ?

You are on an American website.
Why not cheer for an American athlete who just did something very special?
Just based on times, predictability, and their previous performances, Grant Fisher was definitely a surprise which created a more exciting race. However, Jakob's world record is also an insanely impressive time for an indoor 1500m.
Opinion: Jakob would've ran sub-3:30 if his race was on the BU indoor track like it was to Grant Fisher's.

Kipsang ran 3:36 only 6 days ago but you you think he could have challenged Jakob yesterday?
I think Kipsang´s recent 1500m and 2000m performances show he is far from last year´s level.

Weird comparison.
He could have run 13:xx if only his last 200m kick would have been fast enough for many here to be excited.
