I have experimented a lot in my running, from running 30-50 mpw with almost all of it quality to 150 mpw with lots of threshold miles and a lot of combinations in between. Something I have noticed that I can't really get an answer for online is,y mid distance events get so much better when I just slog out huge miles and then sharpen up. An example is I just built a base this past winter of 110 mpw avg (building from 100 - 120) where all I did was jog 9 minute miles plus 2 aerobic oriented workouts and hill sprints the days before workouts, plus a steady 20 miler. I have never had so much speed before this season and before you say the hill sprints did it, I've done them most seasons, so they aren't new. The difference of feel is like when I focus on more quality miles I feel smooth, but low in turnover. Currently, I feel so clunky at fast aerobic speeds, but 5k and under feels EASY. In races, I can go out so fast and feel like I'm jogging, but all of a sudden 2/3 into a race I hit a WALL which is a sign of low aerobic fitness (usually), but I'm not sure why this would happen on such high mileage. Does anyone have any experience with this? (The idea of lots of LSD increasing my speed)
Thanks!
