When will Cooper Teare move to the 1500?

Totally agree, and I expect he’ll move down in about 5 minutes. Much of his decision to contend the 5k at NCAAs/OTs last year probably stemmed from this thinking, “I can’t match my own college teammate in top-end speed but I beat him in strength workouts.” (Not that it didn’t work out for him, as you can hardly argue with an NCAA title followed by 4th at the OTs). The equation changes when your college teammate proves to be America’s best 1500 runner, 6th in the world, and you can beat him in time trials which are par for the course internationally at the moment.

Hocker/Teare/Nuguse/Centrowitz ... Engels - those are your 2022 WC team contenders, with all respect to Alexander, et al.

I think after that after today's race, he's gotta be thinking he's got a great shot at winning at US champs in the 1500. About 6 people in the world beat Hocker in a 1500 last year. 5 of them were Olympians, and one of them was Teare. 

What would be really cool would be if he ended up with a 5k time close to as good as his mile time and tried the 1500/5000 double in Eugene.

You know that he ran 3:50 last February too, and still had a great season (NCAA title, 4th OT)? And the guy he's beat in both races won US Champs last year? Seems like things are going pretty well so far.

I think this is the big difference, because even early on last year it looked like he could be a contender.

I agree that Teare, Hocker, Nuguse, and Centro are on a different level from everyone else in the US, though in a fast race I think the younger guys have a clear edge. Alexander has been great so far this season and could definitely be a factor if he can maintain current form. Engels is also one of our best when he’s on, but he hasn’t been very consistent.

The 1500 field is weaker than the 5000m field, so he would benefit from moving down. 

Since yesterday, I was waiting the result of Teare vs Cole.

Cole Hocker, the 20-year-old from Cathedral, ran 3:50.35. He and Cooper Teare were aiming at the American indoor record of 3:49.89 held since 2005.

Teare could be the best deal of Americans in the distances 1500m/5000m.

and the 1500m is the more stuffed distance.

A guy like Kiplimo could have a place there if he train sufficiently.

Engels just coz you like the guy? He has almost never medaled in anything, leave alone Worlds. Even Centro is really well past his miller prime and closer to expiry date. It’s the younger guys’ time now.

I obviously wasn’t talking about medaling at Worlds, but qualifying for the U.S. team. Why do I think he’s a contender to qualify for the U.S. team? Well, he was 4th at the Olympic Trials last year, which is rather close to top-3. He won the U.S. Championship in 2019 and progressed to the WC final. He ran a 3:33.64 lifetime best last season to win over a heap of other U.S. team hopefuls; that time ranked him #2 in the country last year behind only Cole Hocker. He is just 27 years old, and nearly beat the Olympic 1500 bronze medalist over 800 last night.

teare is probably top 1-3 guys in the country in a paced 1500/mile, but i don't know if he could kick with the top guys at USAs in a medium to slow 1500

I agree. No one cares what you do in a domestic time trial in February when it is time to race with the rest of the world. It’s great we are getting these performances to build confidence for the big meets, but keep it in perspective.

Nope,Hocker isn't protected by USADA any more(1 test ever before the olympics) now he is the AIU pool his "magic" improvement will stop and Teare will keep beating him.

Never and he shouldn't. He's just like Farah - he can run a fast mile/1500 on pure strength, but he doesn't have the all-out wheels to handle the tactical races where he would need really fast last 300's to place well. I just don't see Teare able to easily throw down 52-second last laps in a 3:35 type race. Plus, I think when Teare and Hocker move into the sharpening phase of training, Hocker will leapfrog Teare when he regains his speed just like he did last year. The strength phase that they are currently in will benefit Teare more than Hocker.

I feel like Cooper is stuck in a weird situation where he could probably finish top 6-7 at World's in a fast 1500 and run like 3:30, but Im not sure he would be guaranteed to make it there. He doesnt seem to have the gear change of Hocker, so he might be in trouble off a slower pace. But if the pace is hot, he is probably the best 1500 runner in the country and could be an outside contender for the podium. But that changes when your qualifying heat is a 3:40 race.

Hoping he can work on his last 150 this year, him and Hocker are fun to watch.
