Regardless of emoji usage, it's bad small talk/banter. Dude does not get a pass for his basic-ass joke because he's "trying".
^^ This is correct literally the guys here are so oblivious, and if their goal was actually to succeed with women, they would take the hint from Molly's post and the numerous responses from other female pro runners that they don't find it funny or charming if guys joke about who is better at the thing they do professionally.
Obviously Molly gets that it was a joke (and doesn't need 45 people on a message board explaining what a winking emoji means) but she obviously didn't find it very funny. Hence the lesson here is that if your goal is to flirt with fast females, that kind of line is not going to score any points. If your goal however is to complain about women while not actually getting any, that line seems great.
