When he went out in last, I was thinking what is this sprint-based guy doing? Doesn't he need to get out hard? But then I remembered how even he ran his 600.
We couldn't quite see him on tv on the last lap as it was so fast but he just kept running almost dead even. That kid has a bright future!!!

I am actually disappointed by this result. It's significantly less impressive than his 500 and 600.
Coincidentally displacing Robbie Andrews for no. 2.
Robbie did a great job just a half hour earlier in taking out the men's 3000, helping Mechaal move up to no. 13 all-time.

Athing Mu was the same in HS to be fair.
Why would you be disappointed? A 16:40 5K 1:51 runner who mains in the 400 just stepped up from his normal distance and went #2 all-time with even splits... Obviously, it won't be as insane the farther up he goes in the distance but to think he would be able to try to take his 600 and add a 32.2 lap after that probably would've been asking too much.

It is right about what I expected for a young speed guy. I was hoping for a sub 1475 but anything sub 149 would be decent. Hope he gets a couple shots outdoor to try and run sub 147
I was disappointed only because he was going for the record but pretty much let it get away after 200.
He ran a smart race and showed a lot of poise for someone so young. Had he gone out in 25 with the pacer he'd have died and run 1:53. Well done.
Winner out in 25.7 but beat him by 3 seconds. Unsure why you think he would have died while the top guys didn't.

Those splits are too even in the 800 to run up to his full potential. His first 200 should have been faster.
But it also didn't make sense for him to take the lead, or to move up a little and run in the 2nd lane. So he did the best he could in the race that he was in. He can definitely go sub 1:48 indoors, probably even 1:47.5. I'm looking forward to his next 800.
Perhaps because he is not a top guy yet.
Wow, a kid runs the second fastest indoor 800 in history by a high schooler, and posters are disappointed, criticizing his tactics, or labeling his performance as only "decent." What a tough crowd!
Also worth remembering that he has run something like 21.67 or 21.77 this season. He has massive upside...hopefully he does NOT read this board and find out what a loser he is....
He set high expectations when he broke the 600m record by 2 seconds with the 1:15.58. Until 5 years ago nobody had run under 1:15 indoors with the record of 1:15.12

I know most 400m athletes usually significantly positive split 400m for their personal best. I know most 800m athletes usually positive split 800m for their personal best. I doubt there is biological proof 800m needs to be positive split. The young man split 400m a bit slower than 5 seconds over his indoor 400m personal best. Will S. raced close to an even split race. That is fine. If Will S. raced 800m indoor at the level of his indoor 600m, Will S. would have raced 1:45.xx. I wasn't expecting that. I hope the long build up to U.S. outdoor championship goes well for him.
Sure there is historical evidence that positive splits result in the best performance. I think it is 29 out of top 30 guys ever ran PR on positive splits.

Did you read exactly what I posted??? I KNOW MOST 800M ATHLETES POSITIVE SPLIT 800M RACES. I STATED I DOUBT THERE IS A BIOLOGICAL NECESSITY. Breaking for lane and seeking good positioning is why 800m race is mostly positive split.

Copied from another thread on this subject. There was reason to suspect he could run faster than he did, and the splits suggest he left something on the table. I’m not saying he ran a poor race today by any means, just commenting on his potential.
Positive splits is the way to maximize one’s 800m potential, similarly to the 400m. Gotta capitalize on all energy systems, which means running an aggressive first 200.
I hope he takes another crack at the HSR in a field where he’s able to run 1:19-1:20 through 600 and hang on. Maybe a high school only race where he’s the class of the field would actually suit him better.

What is untrue? Your reading comprehension? We know that is weak. Do you have biological PROOF you want to share that 800m athletes must sprint out less than 3 seconds slower than 200m personal best first 200m? If 800m race were a 4 turn stagger race, the need to sprint fast the first 200m in order to achieve good positioning goes away. You will not find biological proof that first 200m must be sprinted out faster than 4 seconds slower than 200m personal best.
