I don't usually follow ultrarunning all that much, but I have been a fair-weather fan of the Walmsley for a few years now. Interesting that he's moving to France to go all-in on UTMB, skipping Western States this year, etc. Overall a great interview.

The decision probably had more to do with his sponsor. It's no coincidence title sponsor for UTMB starting this year also happened to change from Columbia to Hoka. Most of their new "world series" qualifying races are heavily biased toward Europe so makes sense for their most visible athlete to pivot across the pond this year.

No break up at all. We still run together multiple times per week. Big Jim is the man!
But this was an awesome opportunity for Big Jim and as somebody correctly pointed out, Hoka are taking care of this.

Through the grape vine……There was a rift. They felt Jim got to big time. Also during the pandemic Senseman was going door to door thinking he was going to become mayor and I don’t believe Jim’s significant other was thrilled about the possibility of covid and may have said something. Rumor has it that the cowboys got together and basically made Freriks one of Jim’s best friends basically confront him and let him know that they weren’t happy with him and he’s too big for them and wasn’t trying to promote them or what have you. I’m sure there’s more to the story and it might slightly differ than this but that’s the jist of it.
This is pretty awesome for Walmsley and the sport. Just love it, as his window to win is now and the next 2-3 years.
The other shoe that is going to drop is Kilian Jornet... announcing his new project, etc., wonder if he returns to UTMB in 2023 with renewed focus?

This kind of “stinks” like the GF destroyed this. Like, no she’s prolly a great person and it’s not her fault. But, Jim is constantly in pics with her and not the bois. We’ve all been in a place where one of our friends does this.
Though I would say, there is more to this. None of the cowboys like his strava posts anymore, etc.

He's got only so much time left to establish himself as a true worldwide GOAT of the sport. I also watched the interview and he mentions that it's basically impossible to continue making a living off the sport for another 20-30 years, between injuries, declining speed, and an influx of new runners. He made a great point that some regions like China have only begun getting into ultrarunning, and it's only a matter of time before the elite field gets more crowded.
I think this is the correct move for him, smart guy.
Trail running 8n Europe is a much more mature sport and I think it is a smart move. You also have high profile shorter races so you can race more often.
In the US the high profile trail events are 100 miles and while some of the big races in Europe, like UTMB, are long others are not. Sierre-Zinal and Zegama come to mind.
Good for him.
For Jim to truly be considered among the best ultra runners he needs to win UTMB.
Good for him for going all in.
