it's not unheard of for runners to lie about how much they're training to play mind games with the competition. i'm not saying flanagan is doing this, but we can't rule out the possibility. for all we know he threw in a few 100 mile weeks in his houston build up and didn't think it was worth mentioning or deliberately omitted that tidbit. also, he mentioned that he had a big breakthrough in college after cutting back volume a little bit his senior year. you also hear stories like this about people who have a sh.tton of accumulated miles in their legs not needing to keep grinding out the super high weeks to perform well.
