Sad news:
"Rodriguez, a multiple-time NCAA All-American in cross country, was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Stillwater. According to the police report, he was listed in fair condition with internal, arm, leg and head injuries."

Crazy. Fingers crossed he’s going to be ok. That’s a tough MF right there.
holy sh*t, i dont personally like the guy but thats awful
Just got off the phone with OK State coach Dave Smith. He said he was in the hospital with Isai last night talking and joking until 2 in the morning, so Isai is in good spirits. Sounds like the crash could have been a lot worse and that his injuries hopefully shouldn't affect his running long-term.
Smith described them as "minor injuries but [Isai] could possibly still return to compete this season.”
Didn’t another OK State runnner get in a bad crash a few months ago?
Shea Foster also got in a bad accident recently, but recovered to get All American in XC. Wild story.
That's a terrifying mechanism of injury. Rollover at high rate of speed, colliding with oncoming traffic. I'm shocked he isn't more seriously injured. I've seen similar situations play out in devastating fashion more times than I can count. Lucky kid.
Transfer Shea Foster was also injured in a car crash earlier last year... He made a full recovery and went on to become an All-American.. Really hope Rodriguez can make the same recovery.
I hope both fully recover
but man, that is stupid as hell. Driver should not be able to drive again. Lucky no one was killed.
Stop calling car crashes "accidents."
Just stop.

Really?? You have seen more devastating crashes with similar mechanisms than you can count?
What on earth are you doing on the roads??? Police or ambulance?
It’s a damn shame these kids had to learn the lesson about safe driving in this way. Hope they can both make a return to their elite levels in their respective sports. Reckless young adults often don’t know how dangerous driving can really be. Glad they all had seatbelts on & were able to be rescued, this could have been much worse. Hope for a quick recovery for all.

I will point you to his moniker...
Are you an f'ing idiot??? It's right there in his name.

Indeed. Attempting to pass three other vehicles at the crest of a hill, in a no-passing zone, and driving directly into oncoming traffic isn't an "accident," it's a deliberate choice, and an extremely stupid and potentially deadly one.
Please stop. An accident is anything that is not intentional. Ever hear of accidental overdose? How about accidental death of a mountain climber who fell?

I'm an ER doctor who works at a level 1 trauma center...
I am very thankful that the other driver they crashed into was able to walk away from it, something not the case when my uncle killed himself and others driving drunk decades ago. I hope this very costly lesson will influence Ferrari (probably destined to drive recklessly from that name alone) and others to not treat driving like a fast 'n furious movie. I hope that he and Isai make it back healthy to their sport. Isai is a great talent.

1) He intentionally and illegally drove into the incorrect lane and tried to intentionally and illegally pass three cars while going over a hill. Nothing accidental about it. Goes against everything we’re taught in driving school.
2) The actual definition of “accident” is “happening by chance, unintentionally, or unexpectedly.” Again, the drivers actions do not fit this definition.

Intentionally driving into the other lane to pass those cars doesn't mean Ferrari intentionally crashed into another vehicle. The intention was probably just to pass those cars. Dangerous? Yes. Foolish? Yes. Intentional crash? Doubtful. Therefore, it was an accident.
That said, what's more important: The health of all the people involved in the incident, along with the lesson that Ferrari hopefully learned about safe driving, or debating semantics?
