Well, they're more acquaitances than friends. We're all members of the same social group, and we're grabbing dinner before a show. Myself and 4 others. I don't plan to eat much because I'll just fall asleep in the theatre. What's the proper etiquette for handling this type of situation (splitting the bill) especially given that I don't really know most of the others that well.

if you don't split the bill, throw in a round number that is enough to cover bill, tax, and tip. DO NOT GO UNDER. you will probably end up paying a couple bucks too much. no big deal. just don't under pay.

I like doing this but if there's a poor person or two, theyll likely not risk it. That's why you hang out with rich (or at least not cheap) friends who are willing to pay others once in a while.
If you’re over 25 years old, split the bill evenly. You’ll win some and lose some.
I don’t drink anymore, so I usually am on the losing end as most of my friends drink. I also make a decent living, so I’m willing to pay a little extra for entertainment.
That said, if you’re frugal and don’t mind others knowing you’re frugal, ask for your own check at the beginning of the meal. This is more acceptable, especially if you know you’re not going to eat/drink much or if you’re solo and eating with other couples.
To the people saying split the bill evenly, it's cool for you until you get an exorbitant bill, isn't it?
Here's a story for you that'll potentially make you reconsider:
I went to a strip club in Vegas a couple years ago, several months before the shamdemic initiated. I had bought a bunch of drinks, the vast majority of them for others and Lap dances and my friend Alfonso had screwed off with some latina stripper or two and I considered him gone for the night. I tell a waitress to get the bill. I know it's gonna be a lot and I'm too drunk to know whether they added a bunch more to it, knowing I was too drunk to realize. I get the bill. $2700. Then some guy pats me on the shoulder and says, "I gotcha." I turn around and say, "oh no it's ok, I don't think you want to pay this ridiculously stupid bill." He takes it and acknowledges the amount. He pats me on the shoulder again and says, "I gotcha." I confirmed with the hostess that he did in fact pay and left immediately. I immediately knew what I had to do. I made a beeline for the Red Rock Casino and put $2700 on red on roulette and thankfully won. Cashed out and left the casino. What a memorable night. I hope Mr "i gotcha" enjoys life. I'm sure he will and does.
Solution:
Move to a civilised country where adults pay for their own meal when going to a restaurant.
"Splitting the bill" has to be one of the silliest American social norms...
Have one person pay then Venmo everyone their amount. If you aren't sure if someone will be willing to do that, offer to do it yourself - that way you know you'll pay your amount exactly plus can get the credit card points.
