The 21 year old Brit, Zak Mahamed (21), created a big shock by beating the heralded Italian runner and former Syracuse University standout, Iliass Aouani (26).
Mahamed, up till now, has modest track bests of 4:01 for 1500 m, 828 for 3000 m and 1459 for 5000 m. The Italian, Aouani, on the other hand, has very impressive bests on the track: 3:45.61, 7:57.67 (ind), 13:28.09, 27:45.81.
Will Zak Mahamed turn into the next Mo Farah? probably not, but that is not to say that he cannot develop into a very decent national level runner hopefully in the next few years. I feel that his track times are not representative of his physical potential. Perhaps others reading this who know him well will concur?
