I have recently been doing longer tempos (40-60 min). I noticed that my breathing doesn't feel that constrained and could maybe even have a light conversation with someone, but my legs seem to get heavier over time and I'm just spending more effort on maintaining my leg cadence rather than focusing on my breathing like I would on shorter 3-4 mile tempos.
I did one half (low to mid 1:20s) and the last few miles were characterized by a similar feeling of quad heaviness, though starting too fast may have contributed to that. I guess this feeling is characteristic of when people describe running a marathon where their breathing felt good but legs couldn't keep up.
Is this type of leg strength something that just develops as I do more of these types of workouts and something I need to do get better at races of 10 miles / half and longer? If not training for a marathon, is there any point exceeding 8-10 miles of this uptempo type of effort?
