This sensitive topic often comes up in other threads and ends up derailing them as was the case in another thread today. Since it's pretty common for coaches and athletes to become romantiically involved (at least 30% of the NCAA top 10 men's teams are led by men who are in long-term relationships with ex athletes they coached), we figured there should be one and only thread about it here. Please do not talk about individual cases or name names. All individual talk will be deleted and will result in a temporary ban. You can talk about the topic generically and from a theoretical standpoint. Why do we not want to mention names? Two reasons 1) According to those who believe the relationships are always problematic, you are therefore talking about a victim of sexual coercion and those victims deserve anonymity. 2) I don't want to be contacted by people who have married their coaches and find this topic to be offensive like has happened in the past. It seems like naming names doesn't help accomplish anything. If you feel someone is being sexually exploited by their coach(or vice versa), please contact the local authorities, their employer or the US Center for Safe Sport. If you want us to contact them for you, please give us a call at 844-LETSRUN.

SAFE SPORT GUIDANCE:
1. SEXUAL CONTACTS OR “ROMANTIC” RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN AN ATHLETE AND A PERSON
WHO HAS A POSITION OF POWER OVER THE ATHLETE ARE PROHIBITED.
a. “Person with a position of power” includes coaches, administrators, judges, referees, employers,
staff, medical personnel, and even volunteers or older athletes and teammates.
c. For those in positions of power, this flat prohibition also includes an athlete that is 18 years old or
older, and the athlete “consents” to sexual or romantic contact.
e. All competitive levels are covered by this prohibition; not just elite athletes.
f. Sexual/ romantic contact is permitted when there is a peer relationship between adults, such as
teammates, or there is no imbalance of power between coach and athlete, such as an adult seeking
Master’s lessons. SafeSport presumes a power imbalance for most coach-athlete relationships.
