If student loans get forgiven, do you kind of have to make college free at that point?

Need to remove all Federal Grants, Subsidized loans, etc. College will correct prices downward on their own.

Govt picking winners and losers ultimately did this. By subsidizing institutions it artifically inflated prices for students.

All the more reason we need government out of our lives.

Commitment to a single issue? It doesn't matter what the issue? How about when your loan is forgiven for working in a "socially responsible" position? Mine was canceled for years working as h.s. teacher/coach at a state hospital adolescent program . Presumably society benefitted from my work, so....burn, baby, burn? (Probably no more stressful than inner city jobs I took later.)

BTW: anybody want to tell me how cushy teaching is?

I expect reimbursement for my student loan that I repaid. If not, I plan to reenroll, take out maximum loans, and never repay those loans. What can they do, right?

Higher Ed needs to be gutted and reformed and yes, you and I can then go back to taxpayer-funded school. I mean, take some dollars from the bloated and hugely wasteful military budget and well cover education costs easily.

I always wondered why complete debt forgiveness is the only option ever discussed.

I think we should keep the students on the hook for the principle, so lenders are made whole, but it is the rest of the terms that should be reformed. Once a student graduates, the terms of the loan should be similar to any bank loan or credit cards, with all the same consumer protections.

We should also reform universities who jacked up the prices to the maximum that students can borrow.

I hate to start saying "when I was young ...", but the better solution is what we had when I was at university (in the '80s) -- a nationally ranked state school cost me about $5000 a year, including food and housing -- with increased federal and state funding keeping student costs low. My parents could afford to have 5 kids in university at the same time. European systems are better, where advanced education is practically free. The USA is already paying the price and falling behind.

There is no way the taxpayers of this country are gonna accept paying for the political indoctrination BS at today's colleges.

It's not merely that it's political, it's that it's not remotely intellectual or scholarly. It doesn't even try, all pretense has been dropped.

If you spent a crapload of money on a degree without making sure IN ADVANCE that you would likely recoup the money in earnings and pay it off soon, then you are a FOOL and the last person who deserves any support whatsoever.

No more coddling of sophomoric "educated" fools.

You are usually 16 or 17 when you are making decisions about college. You can't even get a credit card at that age and you wouldn't ever ever give a mortgage to a 17yo no matter how good their prospects are. Do you really expect private companies to loan the full cost of college with zero guarantee or collateral? How many teenagers would they do that for? In those circumstances costs go up as they compensate for the loss of the 95% of students that are declined.

I do think we need tuition free public colleges but that's another issue. I also think we need to help people who are smothered in school loan debt but yeah, the idea of simply forgiving everyone's debt is of no long term use unless you reform the system. Otherwise five years down the road we'll just have another collection of people smothered in student loan debt. My opinion is that there needs to be some sort of limit on how much a person needs to pay back. I've talked to people who are about thirty years old who have paid back more money than they borrowed and STILL owe more than they borrowed. There needs to be some sort of limit, maybe you owe what you borrowed plus a quarter or a third more.

Why is this horrible? Why should we pay off the debt of irresponsible people who spent four years partying and studying useless majors while others worked hard to secure a marketable degree. Let's reward irresponsibility.

No, just continue to make it free for those smart enough to apply for loans. Everyone who was dumb enough to pay cash doesn't deserve free college.

The value of a college degree is being overvalued more every year… not just politics in schools maybe, but the premise of: I can thoroughly learn all of college math on YouTube for free nowadays…. I bet any subject …

And the only way it would be fair is if people's tax increase was on a sliding scale by age. Someone who is 35 and already paid off their college loans one way or another should not be taxed more to pay for a younger person's college. A person who is 38 who did not financially feel they could afford college so they never attended, their taxes should not be increased to pay for a younger person's college. I call B.S. if anyone says the only tax increases will be on rich people, that is not enough to pay for it. Sure you'll get a lot of money from some people but there are not enough people making $500k+ per year to make up the difference. Half of the tax revenue in a year would have to be used to pay off student loans, and then there would be a new fresh batch of loans the next year totaling a couple hundred billion dollars that would need more taxes. And again and again and again.

Only the people who can benefit from it should pay for it.

I really don't think student loans should be cancelled for those who decided retroactively that they don't want to pay the money they gladly took back. Maybe I'm biased because I worked through college to pay for half my tuition and commuted from my parents house while they were gracious enough to pay the other half of tuition, but "forgiving" student loans for those is an insult to anyone who paid for school out of pocket, paid off their loan, or to working class Americans without degrees who effectively subsidized someone's social promotion over them.

The loans that are in question to being repaid are government issued. Thus the idea of them no longer exists. If you take out private personal loans to fund something on your own that is on your own accord. Did you actually have student loans because it seems you don't have an understanding of how they work. Conservatives always be looking stupid making argument to something that doesn't affect them though.
