Shannon grew up and Ives in my neighborhood. She’s an extremely friendly person and our local running hero on the west side of SF. She has had a great career, one few could have imagined when she was running at Sacred Heart high school. I realize many are suspicious of her success, and that’s a sad testament to the state of the sport. In the absence of anything but rumor or innuendo, I believe she ran clean and has been a positive force in the sport.

She’s proof that performance enhancing “grey areas” are worth the risk. She was able to achieve the highest levels of success through progressive coaching and scientific and pharmaceutical innovation.

Too many athletes say, to paraphrase Meatloaf, “I would do anything for performance, but I won’t do that.” Meaning that they are willing to do the workouts and diet and cross training, but put a bogus limit on themselves by being anti-science.

Rowbury embraced experimentation and was rewarded for it. Great career.

It is not proof, but evidence. Most men on this site have a difficult time maintaining body fat in (11 to 14)% range. If you think most elite women with sub-15% body fat are at that level solely based on a good diet, (55 to 95) miles per week and cross training, I have swamp land in central Florida to sell you. Are you saying years of testosterone use has no effect on female reproductive health?

I'm happy for Shannon that she is expanding her family. I have mixed feelings about her as an athlete and her character.

Here's the thing about character--you have to prove once in a while that you have it. It's not enough to just look in the mirror and say "I know what's in MY heart." gotta prove it.

She stayed with Salazar after the allegations and made no plans to disassociate or switch groups even though she knew there was an investigation, credible evidence, and Salazar himself admitted to drugging his own son with testosterone. What kind of a (clean) runner does that?

Oh, and I don't care about the whole "but Pete was my coachhhhh" BS. It was one group. She affiliated with Salazar.

The Mary Cain stuff is unsettling too. She presented Shannon as cold, dismissive and at times catty and cruel. Now, this was a tough situation where Shannon was involved. Because Shannon is a pro runner, not a babysitter and she's not obligated to be a big sister. And she's allowed to vent to her husband via text message about her own training in private if she wants. Mary was in the wrong to read Shannons' phone.

But Mary also said Shannon had said mean things about her publicly in the past. And after Mary came out with her story, Shannon didn't have much to say beyond "I once wrote a master's thesis". Like, girl...who cares? The entire running world was showing support and you couldn't help but make it about yourself.

So it's hard to say what Shannon's legacy is. Going to put it above the burrito girl, but a couple rungs below athletes like Emma, Jenny, Deena, or Molly Seidel.

Marion Jones and her medical team know exactly how she conceived. Marion Jones was only rumored to be a lite doper. She never tested positive and it was only "The Clear." Jones, a sprinter didn't appear to have the extremely low percentage of body fat as some 1500m to Marathon elite female athletes. As you may know, many elite 1500m to Marathon athletes fret about VO2 formula. Kilograms are denominator in VO2 formula. Elite female middle & long distance runners have all the motivation in the world to take testosterone in order to stay slim. Other posters have stated it is, in general difficult for all women to conceive past age 30. Not true. Co-morbidities make naturally conceiving and naturally carrying a child to full term difficult for many women whom are older. Not simply the age. Co-morbidities such as obesity and other issues. My wife and I, both at age 40, decided one more child was appropriate. No medical issues. How many of the women, 1976 Olympics, women semi-finals, 800m are natural mothers? Those women were not rumored to be lite dopers on "The Clear."
