On December 27th 2011 I ran a mile in 4:58. The last time that I broke the 5 minute mile barrier. How fast or slow were you 10 years ago. I will be 55 in 2022 and think that I can run around 5:10 but that may be pushing it.

Strange that I am the first person to respond. I am the same age as you. I once ran 4:15 but can probably only run 5:20 now. I am in shape for a sub 18 5k but the leg speed is gone. At age 13, I could run 5:20 and about 19 minutes for 5k. Ten years ago about 4:55 and 16:45.
I still hope to be able to break 5 this year, and it may be the last year I can do that (age 51). 5 years ago I was running 4:40. Last time I broke 5 was a couple of years ago, but I have not raced a mile since then.
At 56, I haven't run a mile in decades though I ran a 4:42 1500 at 43. I think given my current shape (with a couple months specific work), I like to think I can run 5:20, but am afraid I may not be able to. My best 1500 was 3:53.7 in 1986.
My wife to me last week, "Just get the operation you'll never be a Olympian".
I once ate whole pizza in 2 hour's.
Yea I ran 18:13 for 5k in July. There is a 1 mile race in March that I might give a go.
10 years ago at age 34 i doubt i could have broken 7 for a mile, I hadn’t run more than two 5K Turkey trots in 15 years and while I hiked and biked a lot i wasn’t in the best shape. For 2021 I am down 34 pounds since since January and have been running 4-8 miles daily since early summer and am probably in 5:00 to 5:05 shape, i did a 5:45 for the last mile or an 8k yesterday afternoon. My goal is to get sub 4:55 for the state street mile this June when I will be 45.
Fantastic..I do a lot of hiking and I run about 30 miles a week mostly with my dog.
Most recent workout was as follows:
1x1k w/90 seconds rest avg 3:38
4x400 w100 walk avg 80 seconds
5x200 w100 walk avg 37 seconds
At 43, I tried a few times to break 5. Best was 5:06, as I recall. 16 years later, I ran 5:38.8. This year -- only three years later, at age 62 -- I couldn't break 7:00. Disheatening. (Lifetime best was 4:45 at age 17)
Ra n a 4:58 to, but at 43. Now at 77 do some strides. Sigh!
Ran 4:58 at age 52. Nine years later at 61 I ran 5:27. That was it for me, the last time I ever raced. I’ve been happily reduced to 3 to 5 miles runs 3x per week at a tad under 10:00 pace.
4:58 at 52 is very impressive.
I do notice significant decline from 10 years ago but interestingly my weight has not increased. I feel my strength has diminished but try to do body weight exercises as much as possible.
Currently 56.5, and I struggle to run 4 x 1000 at better than 4:00, so I don’t think I could crack 20 for 5k; maybe if I could manage a good block not training, which I can’t seem to do. Still got decent leg speed but likely couldn’t muster 5:30 for the mile. 10 years ago I was already done racing, but my best masters times at 43-44 were a hair under 4:10 for 1500 and 15:54 for 5000. For me, there was a very sharp decline at 45 followed by a consistent gradual decline.

I plan to run a road mile in June as well. Perhaps it’s the same one.
Anyway, 10 years ago, at 32, I wasn’t running at all and was not fit in any meaningful way. Probably could run around 8:00 if I had to guess.
Today, at my current fitness, as a 42 year old, could probably run around 5:20. That would be a PR for me, which may seem odd at 42, but I’ve only in the last 9 months or so figured out how to train and get the most out of my body. For the 5-6 years prior, I wasn’t training very intelligently and got injured a lot. In June, I hope to run 5:10-5:20 but would be happy with 5:30. I won’t be training specifically for it, nor tapering, so we’ll see.

Those 43-44 times are amazing, hope you figure it out and can manage a good training block.

~ 16 y ago 1/21/2006 I ran 5:04.73 for the mile on a flat indoor track @ age 44yo.
I’m 42 I haven’t trained in almost 8 years I only run 2 or 3 days per week but past 3 weeks I have done 4 runs per week and my goal is to break 5 next weekend. I’m pretty sure I can still run 4:40 or so if I train 5 days for 3-4 months.
First broke 5 minutes as a sophomore in high school, but of 4:20 at age 20. Ran under 5:00 every year until I was 44.
Became a dad at age 44 and never broke 5:00 again.
10 years ago i was a few months removed from the extremely slow bookend to a lackluster college career. i was probably running 2-3 times a week if at all. in the spring of 2012 i started training for my first marathon and got back into decent shape. in that buildup i only ran 40-50 miles most weeks and my longest run was 16 miles. only speedwork was tempo and strides, and i managed to run a 17:15 road 5K off that. about 3 weeks before the marathon i was curious what kind of mile shape i was in, so i spiked up and proceeded to run the first lap in about 80 lol. picked it up and managed to eke out a 5:02. about 30 seconds off my lifetime PR. i haven't tried to run a mile since. that marathon ended up being a 3:03. not terrible for the amount of volume i put in.
now i'm 32, battling injuries, and trying to put together a good spring racing season before father time really comes to collect his due.
Here's roughly my decline:
4:20 - 20
4:30 - 30
5:00 - 40
5:30 - 50
6:00 - 55
No mile times since age 55 now pushing 60
I did run a 65 400 at age 56 and a 32 200 at age 57.
