I have officially quit distance running for CROSSFIT

Why not a bit of both?

Seems the ideal combo if you're looking for life long health benefits.

Crossfit is fun. The community is fun. The downside is the cost and the risk of injury. See if your box has an instructor who will teach you proper form and then watch you to make sure you do it right.

Proper form sounds simple. It's not. It is very VERY hard to maintain proper form when doing exercises for time. Also, read up about Rhabdomyolysis. It is a very serious illness that disproportionately hits Crossfitters.

You say that you will train in moderation. Good luck with that. I have found that nearly impossible to do when I'm in even a semi-competitive environment.

Still, as I said, Crossfit is fun and social. I'd probably do it if it was more affordable. The last time I checked, it was over $200/month at the boxes near me.

Problems with CF:

1. There is NO, ZERO, ZILCH reasons to do Olympic Lifts (snatch, clean) unless you are training for the Olympics. There are hundreds of other ways to train for power that dont require nearly as much technical mastery. This is mostly a ME opinion but many in the strength and conditioning world share it.

2. If you are doing O-lifts you simply DO NOT perform them for high reps much less under fatigue.

3. Kipping should be as a result of fatigue in order to get a couple more reps...not some technique and wild swinging exercise in itself.

Anyway, thats enough for now.

Run 3 x a week. Lift moderate to heavy 3 x a week total body using simple compound lifts. Thats all you need for a fit healthy body.

CF is for Tik Tok and Insta abusers.

This is true, but CF isn't the answer. Alan made two good points above. I think there are elements of O-lifts worth mastering for runners, but they should be done with low reps and technical precision. I'd rather have someone do 5x2 than 1x8 in these movements.

CrossFit also practices low reps and high precision for O lifts. I can't recall seeing someone at my gym get hurt during an O lift. On the other hand, when I ran, I was constantly seeing people get hurt and sidelined.

If you want to join a community, get stronger, learn new skills, improve mobility, maintain your cardio, then do CrossFit. If you want to run and lift on the side too, that works. It's just fitness.

What's the "cross" part of "crossfit?" Hasn't fitness always generally been considered an all-around thing? What's being crossed?

Sounds to me like a recipe for burnout, will probably go the way of Tai bo.

What does it mean to "officially" quit running?

Did you have to file some type of paperwork or sworn oath to make it an official end to your running? where did you send it? USATF? Did you have to have it notarized?

Thanks Adam- you are right on.

As an older runner who is inflexible I learned that my core and glute muscles were weak and the hamstring was being overworked.

3 sets 8-12 reps of Straight leg deadlift, squat, and overhead press 2-3 times a week is what I will be working on this year.

Haven’t started yet as I am a procrastinator and like the let’s run message board more than lifting.

Will run at least three marathons this year.
