Here we go again? Tokyo Marathon organizers say they are happy to cancel if the govt asks one month out.

Too bad. Tokyo is my #1 goal marathon to run. Great race and a great reason to go see Japan.

I kind of understand homogenous island nations wanting to stay more locked down as it’s easier to contain the spread, but at this point we understand how to deal with the disease. We also understand who is at risk and who isn’t.

Agree. Except, I would say no concern over ANY healthy marathon runners running outdoors.

This thing is fizzling out. It’s time to move on.

Rojo, it's because sports are the low-hanging fruit that governments can hypocritically go after to earn PR points and make it look like they're accomplishing something.

While the Tokyo Olympics were being postponed in 2020, Japan had little to no restrictions on business or mass transit.

It's not just the Japanese. The 10km of Houilles are cancelled this week end in France where the population is vaccinated at 78%.

The Barcelona marathon has already be postponed. And this is just a beginning sadly.

But of course these marathons are not that important in the scheme of things.

If you are vulnerable to Covid-19, don't go near the marathon. Everyone else, carry on. I don't think we should be concerned about healthy vaccinated marathon runners running outdoors. If they want to do it, so be it.

Stay on topic. This has nothing to do with being "antivax" or vaccines. I am triple vaccinated and support vaccine mandates in some circumstances.

And I agree with Rojo than canceling things because Covid19 is scary needs to stop. I feel less strongly about this in the case of Japan - different culture, doesn't affect me all that much if they want to become a hermit nation. But if this starts happening in the US, I'll be furious. Thankfully, we are still the most "free" nation on earth and one of the only ones not once again going the route of lockdowns. But I wouldn't put it past the coastal states to start canceling stuff.

I disagree. Health and fitness would prevent a lot of the problems going on today. Not to mention the mental health benefits.

Well Kipchoge doesn’t run difficult courses. Flat only. Correct me if I’m wrong. Nothing against the guy, but name one marathon course he’s done that isn’t ideal for fast times.

Exactly. Sporting events (in North America that includes the NBA, NHL, NFL, MLB), are highly symbolic and watched by a majority of the population. Cancelling sporting events OR allowing them to proceed is a tool that governments use to elicit a desired behavioral response from the masses. State and local authorities are less likely to be ignored if their orders include the cancellation of basketball and hockey games.

How many thousands of people died of Covid in Japan because of the Olympics? They have made their sacrifice. The average age in Japan is one of the highest in the world. A lot more people are at risk.

Peoples' lives are more important than sporting events. This is not how Rojo or the rest of the US rolls, however.
