After a couple weeks of pain, I stopped running on 17 October, got an MRI, and was diagnosed with a posterior tibial stress fracture, centered not far below my knee.
Here are some images of the scan:

My orthopedist initially said 6 to 8 weeks for it to heal, but as I sit here after exactly 7 weeks and 1 day, it doesn’t feel like it’s healed much at all. I don’t have pain walking anymore, but I can still feel it throbbing at rest at times, and I can’t even *think* about running.
What the hell gives? I’ve been a good patient and haven’t tried running a step, and I’ve been mainlining Vit. D + calcium. The only things I can think of that would have delayed healing are a.) starting on elliptical crosstraining too early (~2 weeks) into the rest period and b.) not eating quite enough to support that crosstraining plus the added demand of bone healing.
I have a follow-up appointment scheduled for Thursday, but in the meantime, I suppose I’m seeking out runners with similar experiences. I’m just scared as hell because I’ve healed from previous tibial stress fractures / reactions in 3 to 4 weeks. This is unprecedented and I miss running so much. Thanks for any advice you may have!
