Is everyone still asleep?? Don't see any other posts on this after all the build up and controversy for the last week about Conner going for the AR or not. Anyway, I predicted 1:00:40 on the initial main thread about him going for the AR.

Nice to see Conner tie the American record Mark Curp set in 1985.
far cry from the AR, solid time nonetheless.
Mantz signs with Nike. Wins the US half marathon champs coming off of his XC season. Big things coming for this 24 year old.
Nice. Guess. I don't know anything about the course or the weather.
Two things. One, I wonder how stressed Mantz was today. I'm guessing he was pushing his limits considering his lack of experience at this distance and format. On the other hand he seems to always have something in reserve. Second, what is his upside? Time will tell. He is a mature runner now. Can he improve to true world class?

Looks like he was probably chilling until the 12 mile marker. Then he really dropped the hammer after the last turn onto Sgt Jasper County Park Rd with about 0.8 mile remaining. ~4:25 13th mile, finishing up with sub-60 sec pace last 400m+.
https://www.strava.com/activities/63490644722 minutes faster than Letesenbet Gidey, very impressive.
Impressive. I predicted hed run slower than Gidey.
Equates to a sub-2:07 marathon. Not a bad debut. Course looked a tad bit long too.
Nice run by Mantz.
Also nice to see Chelanga knock out a good one there. I'd love to see him out together a really strong marathon.
According to this site he'd only be a 62 guy without 'super shoes'. So this is a pretty bad race for a two time NCAA cross country champ, right?

Strava has it as 13.2, fwiw. I assume it was certified.
BING BONG
Mantz will win the 2024 Olympic Trials marathon.
It was announced before that he wouldn't be going for the record.
He got the W.
Beat a solid contingent of pros.
He's not the next Kipchoge or Bekele. We all know that. But he's got the most half/marathon potential since Rupp...well unless Fisher moves up.

This is the problem with American runners.
Settling for weak achievements like running three minutes of the HM world record.
Being behind by 15 SECONDS PER MILE isn't remotely in the ballpark of a truly world-class runner in 2021. Are we happy with our best men running 2:08??
Oh wait, I guess we are lol.
You run it then. 2:08 is still nutty fast. Different cultures have different top sports. Relax

Jeebus man, it was his first pro race and first half marathon. The W against a decent field is more than good enough.

All these fast East African times are run in perfect conditions with a peloton of pacers and world class athletes working with each other to chase a time. Americans NEVER compete under these conditions. These are all done in Europe.
Houston is the one chance Americans have to get a fast time, and it never goes out fast and consistent like the artificially baked european time trials.
If Mantz or Rupp(or whoever) wants to get the AR, it'll either have to be organized from the top down in Houston, or they'll have to hop in a european time trial.
