Should be a great day on Saturday at Clovis. Who's going to be there?
I'm just coaching not racing. What's your goal? What race are you in?

I'm enjoying my first thanksgiving weekend off in 15 years. I guess having both teams collapse down the stretch has its perks.

I had one of those two years ago. It was hard to look at the results after not being there in some capacity for quite a while.

Will the Newbury Park boys win with a perfect score and set the all-time fastest team time? Seems likely. They may run 1-6 in fact.
I’m pulling for D5 Lick-Wilmerding to win both the boys and girls titles. Both are favored and the girls are the 2-time defending champs.
Also looking for D5 runner Kenan Pala to break Cooper Teare’s D5 Woodward Park record and post a time that might rival the Sahlmans or the Youngs. It would be great if the fastest time of the day happened in the D5 race.

What are the chances German's record goes down? Who will be the fastest girl? My son and I will be there only as a spectators. The in-laws live near by and it's an opportunity to escape for a while and he can root for his old high school team. Should be a great day for XC!

Unlikely German’s record will fall, but certainly Colin Sahlman or one of his teammates has a shot. Dalia Frias from Mira Costa is the fastest girl in the state.
Those who know better, please correct me if I’m off base.

Keep an eye on Olivia Williams from Acalanes (D4).
Yes, I saw her run this Sat at NCS. Very impressive. She was the standout runner of the meet. From NCS the other individual performer worth noting was Alex Mader of Lick. He jogged the course and won by a minute in the D5 race. He will run with Pala, but in the end it seems Pala is faster. However, I don’t think Mader has run all out this year. They both will likely be under the old D5 record.
Frias and Williams both very swift. Also Sam McDonnell, Sadie Engelhardt and Sydney Sundgren all three of whom have run under 16 or very close to it.

Few seconds faster per mile- seems possible. Perfect conditions- I think 14:21-23. His last mile was 4:27.1 at Clovis invite. That can stay the same, but middle 1.1068 portion should be about 6-7 seconds quicker.
I think Pala will absolutely kill it, but there is just about zero chance the D5 winner will be faster than any of the Newbury Park boys, especially since the top 4 will all be running in a pack and pushing each other towards the end of the race.

I keep on seeing you post about LWHS. You must be a parent/coach

I watched him absolutely crush the rest of the San Diego section last week, pretty amazing to see. He beat a guy who ran 15:08 at Woodward Park this year by 37 seconds and some change.
The Newbury Park boys seem just a little better though. I'd say Pala runs around 14:45, and the Youngs and Sahlmans run between 14:20-14:40.

Agree with your prediction. How good is the rest of Pala’s team? Are they contenders for the D5 title?

Mader was 7th at Clovis Invite- so I’m sure he ran all out. He ran 15:04 there. But Pala seems like the heavy favorite. Two D5 guys could be sub 15. I doubt that’s ever been done. Going to be a great day. Weather forecast looks perfect.

I agree with your prediction:
For the D-1 boys races it will be ~59 degrees, 2mph wind, and morning fog will have lifted and the humidity will be down to around 50%.
The course has been smoothed out and is packed down fairly hard. In other words, it’s going to be FAST. With 4 teammates to push each other, I’m confident this will be the year German’s record finally goes down. But not by much. Before I read your post I was thinking 14:21-23 as well. Splits of 4:32 (1.01 miles), 5:22 (1.12miles) 4:27 (.976 miles).
If they really go after the first mile (4:27-4:30). I think they could run sub 14:20, The first mile can be really fast, without necessarily too much effort, but Newbury Park goes out relatively conservatively so I think 4:32 is about as fast as they’ll go. (I know its crazy to say 4:32 is conservative, but to run sub 14:24, a 4:32 first mile at Woodward is definitely conservative). But who knows… only takes 1 of the 4 to feel good and get excited early. I think German was 4:27 at the mile.
Middle section is very hard to run fast. You have to be good uphill but also really good downhill. Given their avoidance of running Mt. Sac hard, I doubt they’ve maximized their downhill capabilities, but who knows. I’m sure they’ll handle the uphills just fine but you can only go so fast. There’s some uneven footing in the grass section and weird rhythm breakers that also slow you down so running that middle section 6-7 seconds faster than Clovis Invite will be very tough! (That’d be 5:18 for that section. The fastest I’ve ever seen is 5:17.8 by a non-HS Kenyan athlete. Nico’s fastest on that section is 5:23 at 2019 State meet. He went 4:29 First mile at Clovis Invite and 4:30 at State Meet.
*1st mile is net downhill (~30ft) and timing mat/green poles is just slightly longer than mile
*2nd segment starts and ends at same spot but has all the toughest hills (~1.12 miles)
*3rd mile is first mile in reverse so net uphill (~30 ft) but finish line is closer than start so it’s less than a mile from timing mat. I have somewhere between .97-.98
Good stuff right there. My team will be in the D1 girls race looking to make the podium. Good luck everyone.

Francis Parker is strong, but not as good as LWHS 1-5. Santa Fe Christian was likely the best team in D5 and is still the strongest 1-4, but their #5 went down and they’ve lost about 45 seconds at that spot. I think that’s it for them and LWHS will win their first boys’ title.

It’s too bad Pala can’t run in the D1 race. I’d love to see if he could hang with NP. I think he could. He’s proving to be the best D5 runner in CA state history, besting Cooper Teare I guess.
