A step backwards for him as he was 4th in March. But he didn' t make NCAAs on the track.
I'm not sure if he'll be a great pro or not.

His workouts are apparently stellar, but adaptation takes time. Track he may be a different beast
March XC’s was also a watered down field remember
Newbury Park burns everyone out pre college. No surprise

He lost to guys he beat in March, like Hicks, Nur and Clinger. It wasn't a great race but 11th is still good and he is 19 so no reason to worry at this point.

Is this a bad attempt at sarcasm or you being literal. I can't even tell anymore
I was thinking some of it could be the courses. He was quite strong on those rolling hills last year. This year it was mostly flat out fast with just the one hill four times.
His team won. All that matters.
That's all that matters? Betting Hocker is satisfied improving to the point of going pro and not running for his college team. Young would be happier winning individually by 20 seconds over Mantz than being just a good runner on the winning team.
I think track we will see some super fast 5ks. Less team first approach. 13:08-13:12.
Just not an A+ race today. He'll be fine and will have better days.
Not saying Nico is good, but Hicks clearly better. To anyone watching this entire season it should be no surprise Hicks won over Young. Not because Young took a step back, but because Hicks has made tremendous progress since the end of last cross season. I think Nico's high mileage at a younger age is limiting his collegiate growth. Not saying a guy can't run high mileage and be successful in college, but Hicks has gone up in mileage and reaped the benefits of it.
He's still technically a freshman. Adaption to heavier workloads take time. In two years he's going to be massacring the entire ncaa.
The field was much deeper and more talented than the field last March, which was right after Indoors.
He was 4th in March but a number of names didn’t show up due to track being run at the same time. He looked like he was hurting around the 8k mark but he ran the best race he could. 11th is still very respectable and a number of guys are graduating so sky is the limit
The now 19 year old college sophomore Nico would have beaten the then 19 year old high-schooler mantz.
He did run 28:57 for 10k on a XC course. Not shabby at all.

Probably not. Someone like Ritzenhein was a bigger talent but never massacred anything. The NCAA is a deep pool that is being continually refilled with some new 23 year old Kenyan sophomore.
However those writing his obituary are doing so prematurely. He's a prepubescent 19 year old competing against men. Smith will develop him patiently and correctly.

He got 9th at the trials. He had a good year whether or not he made NCAAs

How is training different with a "team first" approach?
He didn't run to expectations today, but I still think he has Rupp like potential. He finished 11th but he was only 10 seconds from the top 5.
