As I watched the NYC marathon coverage I was shocked how poor it was. Maybe I wasn't shocked but I was sad that the 2021 coverage of the biggest marathon in the world is still the same as it was over 20 years ago.
It wasn't the mediocre play-by-play of Tollefson or Lagat, the breaks to Kastor and Johnson, not even the commercial breaks or the interviews and flashbacks to 1971, 1976 and other previous years of the event. My main problem with the broadcast of this (and other WMM in the USA) broadcast:
how is it possible that the NYC marathon only uses so few cameras for a worldwide televised event?*
During the race I have hardly see the likes of Bekele and Nageeye or the Americans (other than Kibet). I was expecting some kind of move of the favorites in the last quarter of the race, but that was guessing as the only information provided was a ticker tape. I would love to see if they were suffering,, Ben True catching up to Bekele.
he same for the women after the leadgroup split up at 16M in, I was curious how the best Americans were doing.
Just that one camera-angle from a vehicle in front of the raceleaders. It isn't that expensive to add a few extra camera's on moving bikes. The broadcast infrastructure (the helicopter to transfer the signal) is already in place.
It's like broadcasting one half of the tenniscourt during a grandslam-final, just following the leader during the masters or showing one endzone during the Superbowl.
Please NYRR, BAA and Chi-Marathon, you can do better to promote the sport and the runners. I can't imagine that you are satified with this kind of broadcasting your event.
*The Amsterdam marathon wasn't even live on national TV, but this youtube-video gives a good example of how marathon can be broadcasted, with an extra camera for the top national contenders:
