I don't know if anyone has brought this up yet, but at the regional meet you have to run prelims in the 5000m but not in the steeple. Now, I know both are hard races, but it doesn't seem equal that you will cover 10,000m if you make the final, and only 3000m in the steeple-as you get a free pass to the final. They are going to run sections based on time in the steeple -i.e. a fast heat and a slow heat! This really doesn't make sense if the whole point of the regionals is head to head competition. This way of running the steeple practically eliminates a whole group of guys from contention. I know that the steeple standard is weak,(9:12) and if a guy runs 9:11 to get there he most likely won't make the national meet, but I think that he should be given the opportunity to be eliminated the old fashion way-by getting beat. The current system basically says, "you aren't good enough, so you go into the scrub heat-out of everyone's way." What makes even less sense, is that if they are going to run the meet like this, why didn't they do the same in the 5000m???!!!??? This is no offense to steeplers, but it just seems that they are being babied. Well, just wanted to know what you guys thought about it.
