Def didn't think he'd get top 10, the way he was running. Which again begs the question what if he had run the first half much slower, staying in the pack??

He went for the win. He got out and did his thing. It’s how he trains as well. There is a huge psychological aspect to the marathon. Maybe him knowing he was in the lead made him feel good enough to run as well as he did. Sitting in the pack and getting butt blasted by a late move isn’t really great. That’s the fate of most Americans. If they didn’t make a move to catch him when they did, he was going to run away with it.

Those floppy wrists would’ve done him in either way.

That's not what he says, but hey, what would he know?
Listen to the interview. He makes it clear he knew he couldn't win, but figured he might finish top 10 if he followed his race plan. That plan was designed to allow him to run his fastest possible race. He got in front b/c his plan was to go fast on the downhills and build up a cushion for the flats and hills, when he's not that fast. That's what he did, and it worked.
It's basically Moneyball meets the marathon -- playing to your strengths.
Check out the Footlocker 2011 video. He’s been doing this for a while!
That 2011 video is fascinating to watch. Although there CJ faded to 36th out of 40. Glad to see he did better today!
that was stupid but he got on tv wrote:
That was not courage. That was a desire to be discussed on this site and get on tv. That first mile was stupid.
Yep ran with no intention of being in it at the end
And he wasn't
I don’t appreciate him any more or any less than the two dozen other American marathoners who are worlds away from being competitive on the world stage. I don’t care how many miles he lead today or at what point he was in first.

I see the shared bravado and showmanship aspect, but CJ is starting off as a stronger athlete, despite Cox competing in a weaker era.
CJ has run 2:11 three times now. Pretty boy Cox only managed to dip under 2:14 three times. Yikes.
Yeah the similarity was that they both took the lead at Boston for an extended period of time. Cox never had the benefit of today's super shoes, so maybe they're pretty close in terms of lifetime bests at this point.
Although light years ahead of the shoes back in the day I'd hesitate to call those Brooks super shoes. They gotta get someone to design a better foam those things are hard as a rock.

What he is doing is why I LOVE Boston. When Meb won this was his only chance. I think when most Americans picture a way they could win Boston, it's not by running with the Kenyans for 25 miles and outkicking them, it's by pulling a sneak attack like this.
Franckly Rojo, I would love to see somebody post on tik tok the reaction CJ Albertson had when he got caught by the chasers!
That was the funniest part of it all! Like he didn't see them coming back on him!

He did look startled.
CJ ran the first mile in 4:32 but the first mile of Boston is downill, so I think if you went down to your local high school track you should run a mile in like 4:40 or so to really understand what he ran. And then see if you can hold that pace for 20+ miles lol.
