We gave Eastbay their credit this year so we should be calling this meet the Garmin Runninglane Championship.

You mean the East Bay New Balance National Cross Country Championships? Or, EBNBNCCC, or my favorite EBNBCCN

https://eastbayxc.com/2021/nationalphotos/style/John Hunt Park is the NCAA South Region qualifier, meaning that it is measured by the NCAA and meets all NCAA requirements. The course has loops for 5k, 6k, 8k, and 10k, all properly measured. So this course is a true 5k and doesn’t need to be measured because it’s an official NCAA course.

Who on staff at the NCAA are the course certifiers? Can you share some names?

Who, how, and with what did they properly measure the courses? That has been a common, unanswered question for pages and pages...

You don't really believe all NCAA CC courses are exact in measurement, do you?

The Hunt course has been wheeled hundreds of times by officials and coaches and it has hundreds of GPS readings confirming the distance. It probably has more info on it than courses that have been around for 50 years.
...and as has been posted dozens of times in this thread, GPS is not very accurate, and neither is wheel on grass. XC courses are specified to be roughly 5k, not accurate and precise 5000m. And that is fine if we recognize the obvious truth that XC course times should not really be compared between courses. But when some people do not recognize the obvious, and want to claim 'national XC record' rather than just course record, they want to measure it accurately and with a standard method. That means chain, since wheels and bikes are not acceptable to them.
Well that is too bad because Letsrun and Runnersworld and Milesplit and others have proclaimed that Hutchins and Sahlman are the record holders and most of us are in agreement.
Many people have pointed out that they have verified the accuracy of their GPS watches by running several certified road courses. I have done this many times in my area on 2 different courses running both directions across 5 miles. Are you claiming that a certified road course is not accurate either. I guess a steel tape is probably not reliable.
I don't care who 'proclaimed' record holders. It's XC, head to head racing on uneven conditions. Course records are valid, so long as the course has not changed year to year. And Hutchins won last year by 58 seconds -- celebrate that as a big victory. But 'national XC record' is silly. Running media will write headlines to get clicks, but it is nonsense.

What are the names of these certified road courses you speak of? We can look them up. I have seen mix ups the day the races with cone placement and at intersections...things happen. But one would hope that a "certified course" is actually the advertised distance.

You will need to take up the chain measuring technique with David Katz. I believe that is common in Japan, but have personally never seen one, or seen it done that way.
We still are looking to round out a measuring crew and get down to Alabama. Check with the BroJos and see if they will cover the cost to fly you and your chain gang to Huntsville. I'm willing to help and learn the chain game.
Disappointed that Santa didn't bring anyone a steel tape for Christmas in Alabama!
At the recommendation of a past poster, I picked up a Garmin 245 and would like check it on on my calibration courses, but they are all snow covered and more is expected tomorrow. With forecasts below zero after the next snow, a trip to Alabama sounds very inviting.
