OP here. I see a lot of people don't believe, which surprises me.
First, take a look at the price chart for Solana (just google Solana price and click on the CMC result).
It's gone up 4300% since March. Even a modest investment would yield some pretty big payoffs. I am not pimping Solana and I don't own any. In fact, I think it's probably a bad investment right now.
These friends in question rode the 2016/2017 crypto bubble with initial investments of somewhere in the ballpark of 25k-100k. Ethereum was trading at $4 in 2016. It is now trading at $3300.
It's more complicated than that, obviously. They all took risks with the money they made on some riskier "coins", some of which were spectacular failures. But some of which were not, and a 1/3 success rate in crypto is probably enough to get you rich.
It doesn't bother me that people believe me or no, but it is true. There are people getting rich off of crypto for no particularly good reason other than they like to gamble.
