California is getting very anti-wildland, wildfire interface zone building. Luckily, I got my ranch before it started. That's a bit of an exaggeration, new permits for single-family homes can be had on already entitled lots, but Zoning laws have been making lot sizes bigger and bigger not smaller. Housing tract developments are getting shut down in fire-prone areas, and threats of mileage taxes are looming to discourage rural building, or to get money into the system to cover the liabilities and for general "green taxes".
In already built places like Louisiana, it's hard to backtrack and implement these things.
