This year (2021-22 academic year) I will be a senior at a D1 Power 5 school. At the conclusion of this year I will still have an 2 additional years of eligibility remaining in all three seasons of competition (cross, indoor, outdoor). I have run times in the ballpark of 8:35-8:40 for 3K, 14:50-15:00 for 5K, 24:50-25:15 for 8K over the past year. I am aiming for times of 8:15-8:25 for 3K, 14:15-14:25 for 5K, and 24:15-24:35 for 8K this season. I am not and have never been on athletic scholarship. I have a strong academic background.
My main question is what the process of transferring as a graduate looks like. More specifically, when should I tell my current coach that I want to use my graduate eligibility elsewhere? When should I enter the portal and begin contacting coaches at schools that I am interested in? Are there competitive programs that are historically more likely to take on graduate transfers that are on the slower end? Also open to other pertinent advice.
Thanks
