Sits on Gidey the entire race, closes in 61.5 2:55 for the win in 29:55. Simply brilliant.
Double Gold and a Bronze baby.
Yeah, totally won the tactical battle.
Amazing. 2 gold and 1 bronze, what am achievement
Sifan Hassan!
yea, i was wondering when gidey was going to pick up the pace, but i dont think she had. the bell lap was obviously not the time. i wasnt sure hassan would win today, but in the end was convincing. very impressive and seems to be the best decision since she wouldnt have won the 1500 regardless.
No idea why so many were hyping Gidey. Hassan has basically the same PR and a kick that's 100 times superior. It was the men's 10,000 all over again, where the WR holder was outkicked by someone who's "almost as good" but significantly faster at crunch time.
Anyway Hassan is in GOAT territory. The 5/10k double is hard enough, but toss in a 1500 bronze??? Insane.
Her refusal to do any of the work was unsportsmanlike, and taints her victory. Her accomplishment was exceptional, but its execution was disappointing.
Credit should be given to Gidey for her aggressive running in brutal conditions.

More outdated Pre crap. You run the race to win, with whatever tactics are appropriate. There is no medal for "work."

LOl@ this. Gidey has one way to win. She had to run in front.
you want hassan to lead, she is going to click off 1:15s the entire race and then drop a 57 on the last lap.
GIdey doesn't want that.
Eh, it’s the Olympics, you do what you can to win. Gidey could have slowed to force Hassan’s hand, but she tried to take the sting out of Hassan unsuccessfully. Great race by all 3 medals.
Hassan is unreal.

Geb never did any work in his 10000 victories...

Undisputed distance GOAT.

This is a truly dumb post.
Maybe Gidey should run three rounds of the 1500 and two of the 5000 first to make this a more sporting competition? Hassan does owe Gidey or anyone else in the race anything.
When I said her victory was unsportsmanlike, I was referring to two points in particular:
1) Gidey gestured to Hassan and the Bahrainian runner to take a stint at the front, which they refused to do.
2) Hassan appeared to give Gidey an elbow as she passed her in the final straight, which was entirely unnecessary.
Look, I absolutely admire Hassan's audacity and guts. Her unprecedented feat speaks for itself.
Still, I would have liked to see a display of strength similar to what Cheptegai produced in the 5,000m yesterday. That was a beautiful display of fitness and racing prowess. Hassan's victory was a stride at the end of a hard tempo run.
Whatever. She won.

Did you see Hassan after the race? She looked like she might die. I was truly concerned for her welfare. What was her core temp? What does that mean, “Hassan’s victory was a stride at the end of a hard tempo run”? Hassan was gutsy and brave, in this race, and all through these games.
