Yeah, but they also looked like completely different vaults. Biles was like 5 feet higher and it just looked so much more impressive for some reason. I didn't even know it was the same vault until the judges said so. I don't know if that actually matters for scoring though.

Comparing Biles 1st vault and Skinners first vault (both with 6.0 D score) Biles was much higher and longer, but with a messy landing and the E scores were very close. McCallum and Chiles got much better E scores than Biles did on her first vault, but had much lower D scores (5.4). Biles in general seemed to have better leg form than most of the other US vaulters, in addition to her height and length.

She basically fell at the end of the balance beam routine, big massive steps back, and they still grade her high

lol , audrey didn't even watch . Here is a recap . Biles flipped , then flopped , then went off the mat with her arms spinning around like helicopters . Judges took extra time to edit her marks, and they determined a high artistic score.

Predetermining the winner is easy , like American figure skating . This is tough because it is not even close . If this was Biles first Olympics , she would be done and going home.

This is why gymnastics is not a sport. No neither is figure skating. An exhibition? Sure?

At least in figure skating, if you fall down after a jump you don't score higher just because you tried to do a quadruple. A successful triple beats you.

Or at least it should. Maybe not... maybe figure skating has no redeeming qualities at all.

I agree. Maybe I don't "get" gymnastics, but in past Olympics I recall being able to estimate what a score would be, or at least tell who did better than who. This one it's like I'm watching with my family and we're all cringing at Biles' bauched landings and feeling bad for her when she clearly looks devasted after her turn. Score pops on the screen: 14.X higher than anyone else. We're all confused. Then it's Jade's turn and everything looks to be in the same ballpark of difficulty and looks executed flawlessly. We look at each and laugh when a score of 12.X shows on the screen.

99% of all viewers would have guessed Biles would have been outside the top 10 based on her performances compared to other athletes. But somehow she is safely in 1st?

As I understand it there is a technical component to the scoring so a gymnast that does a routine with one twist and lands flawlessly may receive a lower score than a gymnast that does a routine with a triple twist that is executed well and then takes a hop on the landing. So the aesthetics may not be pretty in the case of the second gymnast but they are giving greater emphasis to the technical component.

That’s the problem with sports that have subjective scoring and judging. (regardless of the so called rules). Figure skating has always been another debate in judging.

I don't know if you are really this ignorant, but while the landing is easy to observe, there is a lot more to each of the events than the landing. On the rest of the performance, Biles is head and shoulders above almost everyone, both in difficulty and execution.

Yah, am really surprised by all of her landings in prelims! She did not do well (by her standards)

The middle of her routines were good, she’s still in lead and her difficulty is lot higher than her competitors, but a bummer to see her mess up!
