So I guess we're in favor of erasing Indians from history. That cuts both ways. Somewhere Lou Brown and Ricky Vaughn are on the warpath.
The name "Indian" refers to a person from India, so it was already a perverted name to begin with.
Now that I think about it, I think Cleveland River Fire is a good name.
Yeah, one of Trump's election fraud accusations is that Democrats paid "Indians" to vote for Biden.
Cleveland is home to choke artists, so who really cares. Since they're not going with a truly historic name from the past, might as well dub them the Steamers.
When will Notre Dame change their name, as an Irish American I am offended by the name “fighting Irish,” we have been slandered too long, I’m so upset I can barely type…

It's actually a reference to some big statues on a bridge in Cleveland know as the Guardians of Traffic or something like that.
They are actually kind of cool. Plus it's a nice local connection.
Well since statues are no longer allowed and these will surely be torn down, why Gaurdians?

This generation is triggered by everything. With this being said i certainly understand why the name had to be changed. America has a lot of sports teams named after Native Americans and there is not even any Native Americans on those teams. Imagine trying to kill them off in the beginning and then have the balls to name your sports teams after them. Just my wise 2 cents.
If Native Americans as a group are offended by the name why would a team want to continue to use it? It's not about a generation being offended.
meh. sports teams can do whatever... not a big deal it's just a mascot. 30 years from now they will be criticized for forgetting the native americans and leaving them out of americas culture. this stuff is cyclical.

Really? Have you ever looked at their Chief Wahoo logo?

Maybe when it stops being a cash windfall for their Irish Catholic board of trustees. Take it up with them. They named it after themselves.

You don't really understand....
The Indians were considered a courageous and worthy fighting people and THAT'S why teams were named after them. They were someone who were feared and respected. In the same way teams were named lions or wolverines, eagles etc. It's a compliment.
The only ones who object are snowflake liberals, polls show the Native Americans don't really care.

The Washington Football Team has set the precedent.
The Cleveland Indians should of changed their name to the Cleveland Baseball Team.
Should of?

Imagine how Americans would feel if say actual Indians (from India) settle America, slowly killed us off and took the land we once lived on, and then started a cricket league with a team called "The Brits" because they thought we were British...

Predicting a lucrative uptick in merch sales.
First the inauguration, and now the Indians name change. Tom Hanks is the official narrator of choice to help soothe old white guys into accepting change?

There were polls showing originally 90% of native Americans weren't offended. But a few years later the question was asked differently and roughly half said they were offended.

new name pays homage to old name, both end in ___ dians
LOL
🥱
What a bad name.
First of all, it just sucks hard.
Second of all, it doesn't roll off the tongue well. Hard "d" at the end of "Cleveland" cries out for the name of the team beginning with a vowel or vowel sound. (Yes, I said "hard 'd'").
Cleveland Engineers
Cleveland Ogres
Cleveland Alpacas
Cleveland Intelligence
Now, if they aren't going to start the name with a vowel, they should have called it:
Cleveland Rocks
