Remember Rono? Many of his records came directly after drinking or were run with huge hangovers. Did he gain an advantage? What's an advantage? For Rono it probably was an advantage - it was the only way he could live in / with this world and the only way to get to the line.
AGAIN. Track and field should be about getting young people fit and HEALTHY, and medical opinion is unaminous that dope is not HEALTHY.

Maybe so, but it's sure as hell not a performance enhancing drug. And it's now legal in many US states.
Track and Field isn't about dictating what people do in their personal lives, either.

The training required to win an Olympic medal isn’t healthy either.

People get behind the wheel and kill others while high. If you get behind the starting blocks and are high and end up veering into a competitors lane, that could seriously injure them.
So USATF does have a point, as unlikely as it is for an athlete to show up to competition high, it is still possible.
Lots of defence for someone who tested for a banned substance.
Not a lot of discussion about abstaining from drugs.
Is this a real take or are you trolling? You really think the effects of cannabis would cause an athlete to veer into a competitors lane? I'd like to see an old "reefer madness" style film simulating this... could be hilarious! Maybe Paul Chelimo was smoking the reefer?
So many triggered potheads in this thread.
“IM NOT ADDICTED,BTW!!!”

Estrogen is a helluva drug.
Simple - It’s a gateway drug.
Example: A runner will smoke weed, get hungry, then purchase a burrito filled with nandrolone.

1) Track and field is about people competing in a sport (not about morally policing young people)
2) If medical opinion is unanimous that dope is not healthy then why is medical marijuana prescribed by doctors?

Thanks. You made me laugh.

SO did a doctor prescribe her the marijuana? No.
It wasn't until recently that marijuana was legalized and in some places it still is illegal. That is why it is a banned substance.
I would like to clarify that this post is not a defense of Sha'Carri's. While I have made it clear what my opinion on the rule is, the rules quite are clear. Sha'Carri knew the was going to be competing for Olympic glory, and took a massive risk that jeopardized it all.
This thread is not to discuss Sha'Carri's actions. She put herself in this situation.
This thread is to discuss WADAs criteria for a prohibited substance and the faulty reasoning used to justify prohibiting marijuans under their criteria.
So this point is about athletes smoking cannabis IN-COMPETITION, an action which I find hard to justify, but also not something I'd expect to have to prohibit simply because competiting while high would be putting yourself at a huge disadvantage.
However claiming that athletes smoking the dope are a danger to others because "weed bad" is a massive stretch.
So right off the bat WADA is justifying this with a ridiculous scenario that is unlikely to occur and ridiculous assumptions about such a scenario.
To follow understand this point you are going to have to read section 6 of this paper published by WADA
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3717337/pdf/nihms486945.pdfIt is honestly hard to argue against this point thanks to very limited evidence and an undefined criteria for what exactly is "performance enhancing". While WADA references that weed potentially promotes muscle relaxation and increased oxygenation of the tissues. They however many focus on marijuanas psychoactive effects, such as potentially increasing focus, increasing creativity, helping reduce anxiety and promote better sleep, increased sensory perception...
This may seem compelling to some, but I'm going to remind you that there is an awesome drug that boost performance both athletically and mentally... Caffeine, the most widely used psychoactive substance in the world.
Psychoactive benefits are not a reason to ban a substance.
The harmful to health point is debatable. Physically, there is plenty of evidence that marijuana is actually beneficial to your body, evidence WADA brought up themselves when discussing how Marijuana is performance enhancing.
From a mental standpoint there is more of a debate to be had. I find the physchoactive effects of Marijuana to very case by case. Some people experience only positives and can be highly productive, others will suffer from anxiety. Some people become creative, others dumb vegetables.
In a world where globally drinking alcohol is normal and encouraged, I find it hard to argue there is anything amoral about Marijuana usage.
So revisiting the criteria
A) Poses a health risk to athletes
No. Conclusively no. Unless they go driving under the influence.
B) Performance enhancing
Only in the same way caffeine is performance enhancing. Marijuana doesn't allow to achieve superhuman levels of performance.
C) Violates the spirit of the sport.
The most opinionated criteria. WADAs answer to this is clearly yes. I'd personally argue that having this opinion about weed while turning a blind eye to alcohol represents and outdated set of morals based on false beliefs.
So Marijuana at worst meets 1 of the 3 criteria.
It shouldn't be banned, but I find it unlikely WADA will change there stance thanks to the amount of participating governments, including the US Federal government at the current moment, that consider Marijuana one of the most dangerous drugs.

Radiation is not healthy yet it is prescribed by doctors...
Greg get real! How often do you EVER hear and or read about someone smoking weed getting behind a wheel killing someone??? I guarantee ALCOHOL is the number reason why vehicles getting into other lanes and killing people. I guess the many hurdlers who are falling into other lanes are on that weed. It's a ridiculous rule.
Well said.
Banned list is not sport specific
Canabis is clearly a performance enhancer in shooting

Track and field may be about getting young people fit but drug testing is about preventing people from cheating. The medical opinion is unanimous that nicotine is addictive and unhealthy also. Is it on the banned list?
Did Richardson knowingly cheat? That is questionable. Was she careless and stupid? Most certainly. But should that be a reason for her missing the Olympics?
We seem to be the only country who gets popped for this type of positive
Seriously people in 🇯🇲 can get through these tests but our athletes can’t.
My cousin Shane died from a marijuana overdose last year.
That's why I support it being on banned list. We must do something to fight this epidemic before it gets worse.
