RIP
The Olympics are overrated. Even Rupp has medals.
The poor guy never found the authentic Mexican burrito truck.
He’s in the heat sheets.
Can you un-scratch?

Are they gonna DQ him if he does not show up, or what?
Source?
In USATF's status of entries: https://www.usatf.org/events/2021/2020-u-s-olympic-team-trials-track-field/status-of-entries
With Lomong, True, Klecker and McGorty out, the field is a lot less deep. Three sub-13:10 guys and a sub-13 guy no longer in it. From 11 guys (12 if you include Centro) with the standard to 7.

He's not listed in the start list for today's 5km first round, per
https://results.usatf.org/This is a bummer - was really looking forward to seeing him come back for the 5k. Anybody know the backstory on why he scratched?
On some level I'm hoping Grant makes the 5k team and concedes his 10k spot. Seems like BTC is chummy with True given that they let him into their 10k race earlier this year to chase the standard.
Damn, I was rooting for him to make the 5k team. :(

Unrelated quibble, but I hate the qualifying format. Top 5 + 6 time qualifiers is waaay too generous to whoever is lucky to get in a faster heat. Should be Top 6 auto + 4 time Qs or even Top 7 + 2 time qs. Ultimately probably won't matter given all the high-profile scratches.
His olympic dreams aren't over. If Grant Fischer makes the 5K, he should run this one instead because he has a better chance of medalling or getting top 10 in a tactical race which happens far less often in the 10K. If Grant scratches the 10K, True is in.
I personally think Klecker and Kincaid should scratch the 10K, but I think they've both committed to doubling which seems unwise to me

Thanks rojo.
This news of True scratching sucks. I think we all were looking forward to root for him to try to make the team in the 5k and I think he as a solid chance if some guys make both 5k and 10k and scratch one. I'd like to see an interview with him about this decision. I'm guessing his legs just might not be feeling up to par at this point if he scratched.
It doesn't matter.
True was overreaching a few weeks before trials and it set him back.
He did a decent job training back out of the well, but you still have the factors of heat
and the requirement for a kick to make a team.
Less heat build up in the 5000 than the 10000 but also higher temps
and more 3:52 milers to contend with. And they're lighter, so also working with
a heat dissipation advantage.
He can certainly get to < 60 half marathon shape and roughly 1:47 800 shape.
But to make a team now you < 60 and < 1:47 800m.
The only chance True makes a team at 5000 now is cloud cover and a break from the pack
like McChesney pulled off in 1980.
If he fixes his training he can make the 10000m for worlds, but it won't be with a 400 or 600m kick.

Exactly why many top East Africans could care less about the Olympics and focus on major marathons, True should focus on the New York and Boston thon the next 5 years and forget about the track. The track is for sprinters.
Hands down one of my all time favorite runners and I'm sad to see him leave the track but....
Is he really built for a marathon? I can see him having success on the roads 10k to the half but to be a contender, even domestically now, he'd have to be sub 2:09...is he designed to go that far?
He’ll give it a try
2:09-keep with it
2:19- yea 10k and world xc it is
