The Unkle's argument was regarding whether the punishment is proportional to the crime. First offence - Toss him from the game. Repeat offence - More serious banning. The justice system is structured this way: Speeding ticket: fine --> bigger fine --> licence suspension. Petty crime: probation --> conditional sentence --> incarceration.
As others have pointed out, there is a double standard at play: Fan assaults player - banned for life. Player assaults fan - short suspension. Then there is the issue of what do you do when the stadium security assault the visiting coach!
There is no double standard. Malice at the Palace was over 15 years ago and Artest was assaulted/provoked by the fan first. If you walk into a business establishment and throw a water bottle at an employee, it is the owner's prerogative to ensure that you don't get a second chance to f*ck up his business and injure his workers. Complaining that this is somehow contrary to the US justice system is asinine. You do not have a constitutional right to attend a basketball game and act however you want.
