Yay!
I think from now on a high schooler is going to break 4 every year. We have had Leo Daschbach and Hobbs Kessler. We have so many more that I know can do it too!

In was a lot harder in the 60s when you consider quality of shoes, track, and training methods.

He looked pretty old back then😜
I saw it on tv. hard to believe it was 20 years ago. time flies.
Still an incredible record. I doubt many high schoolers will surpass that record anytime soon
WEBB IS BACK, BABY!!!
I must admit, I had never expected any HS runner ever beating Ryun's record. Just goes to show: no record lasts forever (well, maybe Komen's 3k...). Great job by Webb.

Only Americans care what you run at HS
He did nothing at WC's or Olympics and maybe if he'd not set this record and trained too hard at that age he could have run better when it really matters

That American record in the mile is worthless to celebrate, too. Stupid Americans...
Americans care more about HS records than U20 but the rest of the world cares about those. Not much different in terms of choosing a metric to use that is below a purely open record. Actually U20 makes even less sense because many 19 year olds are around their peak.

Yep.
No other country cares about US high school records.
Nor should they.
And oppurtunities
It is going down today with Hobbs Kessler in Oregon.

It's a useful way to compare local talent though. We can say, wow, no one in this country has ever run faster than Alan Webb did in his HS record, that was a pretty freaking fast run.
Or we can say, wow, Nico Young, 3k indoor HS record holder came up almost 15 seconds short of Galen Rupp's 5k HS record, that's a really strong run! Maybe he can go on to replicate some of the success that Galen Rupp did in college and professionally.
That'd be like saying "No country other than the US cares about US National Records" Like yeah I bet they don't but it's useful to compare the best of the best. We can say wow, no one has beaten Galen Rupp's 10k record, or really even come close to it, that was a really fast run.
One day, if someone does break that record, we have a benchmark to compare them. If Connor Mantz comes out and runs 26:43, we can say that he might be on the way to replicating some of the success that Galen Rupp had on the track. Plus, it can help motivate athletes to try to run faster than any of their peers/countrymen have ever run.

Komen's record requires specialization.
for the WR
In the 5000 you're looking at 60x second pace.
in the 1500 54x pace
the 3000 is between, so the 1500 guy will struggle after 6 laps
and the 5000 guy will struggle with the rhythm only a few laps in.
you're talking about dedicating like 2 seasons focus on 57x 400m speed work.
specialization.
that is unless you're a quantum leap ahead of the curve, like an athlete that's never been seen.
if Jacob I. continues his improvement, he is that guy.
this progression below is beyond jaw dropping. it's historic so far.
https://worldathletics.org/athletes/norway/jakob-ingebrigtsen-146537172 years of natural progression and he can get this record.
of course anything can happen and does.
