Because these are prelims and the guys in the West are smarter than the guys in the East.
Aren't there zero (0) Ivy Leagues in the West?
How many Ivy League runners were in that 1500?
How many were in the West?
Why don't we wait until after the heats to make this comparison, shall we?
It's hard to compare times at different facilities run strategically on opposite sides of the country. The point of a prelim is to advance to the next round using as little effort as is possible. Stop trying to compare times that honestly are not that different other than one outlier who probably exerted himself too much. I'm sure the Oregon guys and Notre Dame guys that did just enough to qualify will be ready to go when the races really matter.
Heat Index in College station was about 95, versus 87 in Jacksonville. That's probably significant enough of a difference.
You're either dumb or trolling. Obviously all of the West heats were somewhat tactical, and the east had some people who made it an honest prelim. If we wait and score the 1500/5k/10k and steeple between east and west I guarantee you the west will win. Some other event groups however the east is a little stronger.

Get a load of dis guy. He thinks the "smarts" has to do with what college someone goes to, as if there aren't all kinds of shenanigans going on with who gets into the IVY's.
Besides, he was talking about racing smarts. Not to mention, the best western schools ALL match up with the IVY's and then some.
Something about the “trade winds”
You didn't understand the original question. Why did the East run faster? The answer is that the fast guys in the West were smarter by running slower in order to conserve energy. The fact that the Ivies are in the East does not impact the idiots who ran a hard effort in the race. Ask the same about the 10k and I will tell you that Kiptoo is an idiot for running all out rather than just finishing top 12. But some of the top 1500 runners in the East were dumb also. It won't be close at nationals between the regions.

Nailed it

Applauding a 3:37 1500 in the first round of the preliminaries?! haha.
Prelims dude. Prelims.
