Covid has raised the issue of people with previously safe jobs being exposed to a potentially life-threatening virus. Sadly, there are a number of examples of bus drivers etc being exposed to the virus while at work and dying.
It soon became pretty clear that, for a lot of people, the only two options were: 1. Go to work and take your chances; 2. Quit your job.
This reminded me of a man who lived nearby when I was a small child. He was a nuclear inspector. When Chernobyl happened, his job was to go out there and inspect it. He came home, developed a brain tumour, and died soon after.
I never understood why he went. Presumably he knew it would be very dangerous. But he had a wife and two daughters, a mortgage, etc. I asked my parents why did he go? They said, it was his job.
He was faced with the same two choices of go to work (knowing it will probably kill you) or quit your job. Seemingly the option to quit was less viable.
I am terrified by the idea that I might one day be put into this scenario. So, here’s the question:
You are a nuclear inspector. You have a family to support. You have a mortgage to pay. Your pension is linked to your job. You are told to go to a Chernobyl-esque nuclear disaster. You know this will likely kill you. What do YOU do?
If anyone is wondering what this has to do with running, the nuclear inspector was a hobby jogger.
