her 1500m runs this season are quite impressive, each races were different, she kept PRing
and lessons were learned a long the way, and she even applied what she learned from her
previous races in the first round the other day
the race today was unlike her previous races and she may or may not made a mistake of overtaking too early in such a fast pace 48 sec 300m - but if she waited long she would have to catch up a longer distance, both options are tough work
she may not have qualified but learned another lesson which is still a win, in a long run
yea, she never learned this in hs, but i guess thats the price to pay for those records
A mistake many people make, including commentators, is believing that gaps won't open up. Space always opens up in races that you can fill if you're paying attention. 15 seconds into this race the best thing she could have done is just chill in and slot in behind #2. Then #2 would swing wide out of fear and burn up some of her matches to move up and you take that spot saving all your ammo. You just wait for the other girls to be impatient and then take their spot. It's no different than investing really, the patient are rewarded time and time again. With 800 to go KT could have used considerably less energy and found herself on the inside of lane 1 in about 6th position. And again space would open up and she could have easily gone through if she had the legs.
It's much easier to spot this watching a video sitting on the couch, of course. She has undoubtedly learned more about race tactics her first year of college than she did in all of her previous years of running. Learning to move through a pack rather than around it is one of the hardest things to do, as it requires patience in a moment where you not only feel like you need to swing wide or the race will get away from you but you also feel like you have plenty of energy to swing wide and move up.
It'll be fun to watch her continue to improve tactically.
