I am working on the Week That Was and was looking at some world lists and noticed there were zero sub-9s for the US in the steeple last year. I checked three databases - tilastapaja, tfrrs and world athletics.
Does anyone know of an American that broke 9:00 last year?
If not, when is the last time this happened in the US?
I think there was that one year during the caveman days that 9:00 wasn't broken but it was too long ago to be sure.
Some time in the 1950's - every USATF/TAC/AAU winner since 1960 has been sub-9. And no American broke 9 until 1952, Horace Ashenfelter being the first with an 8:51 in the Olympic heats (his previous AR was 9:06), which he lowered to 8:45 in the finals two days later.
2021 might be a good cherry pick year for some newcomers to the event.
If you’re a collegiate or long time vet 1500-10k that doesn’t have much of a chance in the making top 3 at the trials, start doing some hurdle drills!
9:28.49 was fastest American.
I think Freirichs didn't go under.. she was 9:00.85 for the American Record :)

Do you think maybe that's because there weren't many track meets to run and those that were run didn't include a steeple?

Wow, I wonder where Nick Symmonds's gimmicky 12-minute steeplechase put him on the 2020 USA rankings. Top 10?
