Another interesting 'low mileage' guy was John Sheridan - a five feet 4 inches Irishman who worked as a labourer and ran to and from work as his training....yes you guessed it - two 4 mile runs a day... often at a nippy pace on the canal bank near the West London Stadium, Shephards Bush area of London (England). John, by the way, ran around 2:17 for the Marathon and was a very good road runner - able to run 49 minutes for 10 mile road races week in week out. John would usually run a 10 miler on weekends, but when training for marathons would do a 15-20 mile run on Sundays...starting out at TVH West London Stadium, going over the roads and then to Wimbledon Common, where he would meet up with a bunch of other runners (some of them ordinary joggers) and then run back to TVH.
Another low mileage man - Gerry Helme - of Liverpool, who ran around 28:11/10.000 track and 2:11 for the marathon...on 50-60 miles a week.
Karl Harrison (Stretford) back in the mid. 1980's, ran around 13:37 and 28:15 for 5000/10.000 track, on once a day training - about 50-60 miles a week. He worked (like all the Brits at that time) an ordinary job, and would run in the park and on the roads after work.
I recall Karl being invited to run at Crystal Palace in some International track meet, and he (Karl) turning up with all his running gear and stuff in a TESCO'S shopping bag...he was very low key and did not look like an International if you saw him in the street, just an ordinary guy.
There were many others at the time, but enough for the moment.
