Las Vegas Marathon Prize Money

According to their website, the prize money is as follows:

Men and Women

1st $50,000

2nd $25,000

3rd $15,000

4th $10,000

5th $5,000

6th $3,000

7th $2,000

8th $1,500

9th $1,000

10th $500

Also, according to last year's results, only the top-3 guys broke 2:45. So, am I to believe that a guy running 2:44 last year won $15,000??? If that's the case, I'll book a last-minute flight and jog a 2:50 for a few grand.

Have they just added prize money for '05? What am I missing?

I believe the race is under new sponsors this year and they are really looking to attract an elite field. Last year the prizes were much smaller.

I ran Las Vegas last year and don't remember the men running quite that slow. I do remember the winds being a huge factor, especially in the half marathon. We had headwinds up to 30 miles per hour for a big portion of the race. The marathoners didn't get the wind until later, but it still affected the outcome. Wind has been a big problem in Vegas these past few years.

The LV Marathon was just recently bought by the Devine Racing company which also owns the LA Marathon, Salt Lake City Marathon, and Chicago Half Marathon. It looks these guys are trying to grow their marathons into world class events with an attempt to attract many elites with their prize structures. Just from glancing at their site I'd say these guys are pretty serious about the marathon business and would guess that within five years they will have at least one of their thons nipping on the heels of the big 5.

Does the SLC Marathon, also by Devine Racing, have prize money? Tried to find info about it on the website, but no info that I could find.

SLC does offer prize money. They have not announced the 2006 prizes yet but I did find the 2005 prize awards on their site:

"Elite runners from Kenya, Ethiopia, Australia, Russia and the United States competed in the highly competitive marathon. Vying for a purse of more than $125,000, which included $25,000 prizes for the top male and female runners"

Couldn't find how deep the awards went. I imagine fairly deep since their was $75k remaining after first male & female.
