What about Seb Coe, same Olympics, WR in the 800, gold at 1500? Or is he DQ’d for some unspoken rule that you can’t also set a WR in your gold medal event?
El Guerrouj was 1500/mile record-holder when he won the Olympic 5k, though not until after he’d won in the 1500.
There are numerous guys who set WRs in two Olympic events and won golds in both of them (Snell, Kuts, Bolt, Viren, Bekele, Johnson, etc.)
There are 100m WR-setters who only won gold in the 4x1 (most recently Asafa Powell).
On the women’s side, Fernanda Ribeiro is someone who seems to fit any possible stipulations (i.e. she was already 5k WR holder when she won 10k gold, and she never won 5k hold or set a 10k WR). There are probably others (I don’t think the aforementioned Gail Devers qualifies, does she? She never set a 100h WR).
WR in one event Olympic Gold in another? Only Ovett?

I was also going to say that at the exact same time where Ovett held the 1500m record but won the Gold in the 800m, Coe was the 800m record holder but won the 1500m.
Or does Coe get DQed here for being a former 1500m record holder at the time? -

Lol there are like a dozen other examples. -
Probably missing the most obvious answer of them all. Carl Lewis. Unless you don't count Beamon or you do count the Indoor record. But by the name of the question, he had the WR in the 100 and won 4 golds in the LJ
-
Also he had a 200m gold but no WR

Gail Devers?
Gail Devers never had the 100m hurdles record, though she was a world leader in that event but won Gold in the 100. -
Did Gebresellaise ever win Olympic 5000m gold? I think not.
He held the 5k world record, and won 10k Olympic gold. -
Did I misunderstand the theme of the thread? Coe was 800m WR holder and got gold in the 1500m. Since we're talking about Ovett this seems obvious.
-
The point of the thread is to ask someone who had the WR in a DIFFERENT event than the one you set the record in. So Geb had both world records when he won 10k gold. Doesnt count.
Carl Lewis never set the 200 or LJ WR outdoors (bad "luck" in the LJ) and just missed the 200 record.
Ovett never had the outdoor 800 record but won gold in the 8. He did have the 1500/Mile WR though. That counts
Coe set 4+ WR's. He doesnt count. -

No - it's not you. It's a stupid thread. -
Jazy not a top 5k runner? In 1965, he beat both Clarke and Keino in the big 5000m clash of the year.
-
Noah Ngeny and John Walker. Neither held the 1500m WR and have olympic gold and WRs in other events..

Agreed. Seems the OP just screwed up and now we're trying to insert loopholes so they were not wrong. -

But he was the joint WR holder at 1500 at the time. -

At least in 1980. -

sorry meant that you couldn't set a record in the event you ever got the gold in.

Wang Junxia WR 10,000, Gold 5,000 Atlanta.

Alberto Juantorena broke the 800m WR and won 1976 400m Gold Medal.
He did, however, have an 800m Gold ALSO, so maybe that DQs him from this strangely worded question.
