I know, I know... seeking out answers to the specifics behind Salazar and Rupp’s comes with a lot of suspicion but let’s put that aside. The fact of the matter is that no coach has been as successful as Salazar, and no American runner as dominant as rupp when it comes to distance running on the track... 5k-10k in particular.
I know there has been a lot of shorter threads on the boards about salazars methods but I was wondering if anyone had the real big picture of salazars training for rupp and the rest of the NOP.
It seems that Salazar did do a few things not necessarily common across the board for distance programs and would love to hear more. For example, he did the following things unique to other programs.
- strict easy day pace and run at a decent clip. I believe rupp has been said to run as quick as 5:20 on his easy days... this is not the common practice but if it’s effective why doesn’t everyone else do it relative to their own ability versus the jogging you hear others like the tin man group doing.
- 2 different peaks per year with periodizarion revolving around building up to a nearly unsustainable training load for 6-8 weeks of max volume and intensity.
- a longer peak of 4+ weeks after this max training period
- More focus on speed than most programs. He has his athletes running shorter, faster reps every single week, even at the beginning of a macro cycle.
- less a focus on strength workouts. You never hear about them doing longer tempos for example. It seems like his athletes workouts are always fairly intense and lower volume compared to other groups and so perhaps they rely on the faster easy days paces to help with the aerobic strength that other programs might aim to develop with longer tempos and marathon-type paced work.
Anyways, I would love to get more insight and thoughts from other who are more in the know.
