Agreed.
We have a vaccine(s), and are wearing masks in general, but it's still Labor Day by the time things can start being normal again - though normal will no longer be normal.
Tokyo 2023,
Paris 2024
Los Angeles 2028
Seems like a convenient timeframe to try to get lots of hardware before too many years pass between games
It will happen. The other important sports are back, so why not the Olympics? I understand athletes from over the world coming together is a big risk with covid but I digress to my last sentence and hold my position.

You forgot 2022. Missing a year? If it was 2022, that is a seriously long time between the marathon trials of 2020 March and 2022 Olympic Games. Adi would be pushing 50.

Why not spread a little dysentry among the ranks?
I don't think you mean digress. Revert, maybe.

Maybe he assumed they wouldn't do them next year because of the World Championships, I have no idea how that would work if they decided to postpone again.
If it doesn't happen in 2021 it won't happen unfortunately.

The 2021 Olympics will happen, although we may have a 1980/1984 issue where several countries aren't represented because they are worried about COVID.
The January sumo tournament is happening right now, in spite of something like 65! positive tests amongst the wrestlers, including the number one sumo wrestler of all time (Hakuho). In fact sumo for the most part has continued unabated, except for the May 2020 tournament.
I think its possible you'll see no foreign fans allowed in, that would be the biggest thing.

agree-we will most likely have a scaled down event with limitations on spectators and quarantines being in place for athletes prior to the games---I really can't see the IOC cancelling and losing out on the $ from TV rights/sponsorships

This is a good point. We've seen MLS, NBA, NFL, MLB, and premier league all compete during this time. Tokyo is half a year away and the vaccines have begun being rolled out.
I'd rather see them cancel the riskiest sports and severely reduce spectators than see the entire event canceled. Risk mitigation seems appropriate for the late summer 2021 time frame.
A lot of the sports can be done at a low risk. Track, marathon, cycling, swimming, tennis, soccer all can be done with minimal risk and also are very inclusive across a large number of countries, and tend to be some of the most watched on tv, so still will bring in some sponsorship money to the event.
Likewise, weightlifting can be moved outside. Archery seems very safe. Sailing seems very safe. Shooting seems safe. Rowing seems very safe. Equestrian seems safe. These aren't all as highly watched, but at least theyre pretty inclusive across countries and can be run safely and cheaply.
Ditch basketball, its just a free medal for us Americans anyway, it doesn't really fit in the Olympics anymore anyway, imo. Or move it outside, people play basketball outside all the time.
I see no reason you can't move gymnastics outside and just quickly sanitize equipment between competitors.
That ribbon dancing and ballroom dancing and other junk nobody watches? Just drop them, it simplified logistics.
12 sports can get 95% of the countries normally competing still fielding teams, but cuts the total number of athletes in half, so the athlete's village and transportation is more spaced out. You concentrate the tv sponsorship opportunities to minimize the loss.
This is happening in a rich nation, so they can take the hit on lost ticket sales and reduced tv revenues. I see no reason this can't move forward in a scaled down capacity. Ask the 20 richest IOC nations to chip in a bit extra to spread the pain out a bit.
Japan has already built most of the infrastructure, you aren't getting that money back. Hosting should be cost neutral if you ignore the facility construction cost that is already sunk.

A little ridiculous but the whole world is traumatized so I doubt the olympics will happen.
They should happen though- we would have been living with COVID for a year and a half at that point and a couple hundred million vaccine doses world wide should have been injected in the next seven months leading up to the olympics. At some point we as a species need to grow some balls and get back to life.
